Expression of secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC)/osteonectin, a collagen-binding matricellular protein, is frequently associated with tissues with high rates of collagen turnover, such as bone. In the oral cavity, expression of SPARC/osteonectin has been localized to the periodontal ligament (PDL), a collagen-rich tissue with high rates of collagen turnover. The PDL is critical for tooth position within the alveolar bone and for absorbing forces generated by chewing.
