Artificial nerve conduits capable of adequately releasing neurotrophic factors are extensively studied to bridge nerve defects. However, the lack of neurotrophic factors in the proximal area and their visible effects in axonal retrograde transport following nerve injury is one of the factors causing an incomplete nerve regeneration. Herein, an advanced conduit made of silk fibroin is produced, which can incorporate growth factors and promote an effective regeneration after injury.

Methods: Male Wistar rats (n = 60) were divided into four groups: sedentary control (SED-C), intermittent fasting (SED-IF), high-intensity interval training (HIIT-C), and high-intensity interval training plus intermittent fasting (HIIT-IF). SED-C and HIIT-C groups were treated daily with ad libitum chow; SED-IF and HIIT-IF received the same standard chow every other day.

Transdermal permeation of bacteriophage particles by choline oleate: potential for treatment of soft-tissue infections.

A sodium alginate-based biohydrogel was prepared integrating choline oleate deep euthetic solvent as facilitator of transdermal delivery and a cocktail of lytic bacteriophages for , aiming at treating soft-tissue infections by the aforementioned pathogen. Two bacteriophages were isolated from a hospital sewage and a wastewater treatment plant sewage in Sorocaba (Brazil), and characterized via SDS-PAGE electrophoresis, transmission electron microscope and evaluation of lytic spectra of the bacteriophage cocktail. Our translational study aimed to test the efficacy of the antiviral agent sofosbuvir (SOF) against vertical transmission of ZIKV and the associated congenital syndrome (CZS), using a rhesus monkey model. Eight pregnant macaques were successfully infected during the organogenesis phase with a Brazilian ZIKV strain; five of them received SOF from two to fifteen days post-infection.

The combination of marine origin biopolymers for tissue engineering (TE) applications is of high interest, due to their similarities with the proteins and polysaccharides present in the extracellular matrix of different human tissues. This manuscript reports on innovative collagen-chitosan-fucoidan cryogels formed by the simultaneous blending of these three marine polymers in a chemical-free crosslinking approach. The physicochemical characterization of marine biopolymers comprised FTIR, amino acid analysis, circular dichroism and SDS-PAGE, and suggested that the jellyfish collagen used in the cryogels was not denatured (preserved the triple helical structure) and had similarities with type II collagen.
