To investigate the stability of nanobubbles in natural hard water, a series of eight samples ranging in hardness from 0 to 332 mg/L CaCO were sonicated for periods of 5-45 min with an ultrasonic horn. Conductivity, temperature, ζ-potential, composition, and pH of the water were analyzed, together with the crystal structure of any calcium carbonate precipitate. Quasi-stable populations of bulk nanobubbles in Millipore and soft water are characterized by a ζ-potential of -35 to -20 mV, decaying over 60 h or more.

It is shown that two commonly encountered expressions, the magnetic field gradient force and the concentration gradient force for paramagnetic species in solution are equivalent for incompressible fluids. The magnetic field gradient and concentration gradient forces are approximations of the Kelvin force and Korteweg-Helmholtz force densities, respectively.

Hypothesis: Ortho and para water are the two nuclear isomers where the hydrogen protons align to give a total nuclear spin of 1 or 0. The equilibrium ratio of 3:1 is established slowly in freshly evaporated water vapour while the isomers behave distinct gasses, with their own partial pressures. Magnetic-field-induced ortho ⟷ para transformations are expected to alter the evaporation rate.

The electrosorption of Gd ions from an aqueous 70 mM Gd(NO) solution in monolithic carbon aerogel electrodes was recorded by dynamic neutron imaging. The aerogels have a bimodal pore size distribution consisting of macropores and mesopores centered at 115 and 15 nm, respectively. After the uptake of Gd ions by the negatively charged surface of the porous structure, an inhomogeneous magnetic field was applied to the system of discharging electrodes.

Here we show that the thermodynamic equilibrium of Gd-bearing supramolecular rod networks is shifted reversibly at room temperature in a static magnetic field of up to 2 T. Our approach opens opportunities to control the structure formation of other supramolecular or coordination polymers that contain paramagnetic ions.

The effect of a second 200 fs, 800 nm laser pulse that follows the first pump pulse, when both are above the threshold for switching, is studied as a function of t_{12}, the time between them.

A major phenomenon within this family is the so-called Faraday chiral anisotropy, the long-predicted but yet unobserved effect which arises due to the correlated coaction of both natural and magnetically induced optical activities at concurring wavelengths in chiral systems. Here, we report on the detection of the elusive anisotropic Faraday chiral phenomenon and demonstrate its enantioselectivity.

However, their imperviousness to magnetic fields also makes them difficult to control in a reversible and scalable manner. Here we demonstrate a novel proof-of-principle ionic approach to control the spin reorientation (Morin) transition reversibly in the common antiferromagnetic insulator α-FeO (haematite) - now an emerging spintronic material that hosts topological antiferromagnetic spin-textures and long magnon-diffusion lengths.

We study the demagnetization dynamics of the fully compensated half-metallic ferrimagnet MnRuGa. While the two antiferromagnetically coupled sublattices are both composed of manganese, they exhibit different temperature dependencies due to their differing local environments. The sublattice magnetization dynamics triggered by femtosecond laser pulses are studied to reveal the roles played by the spin and intersublattice exchange.

Hard magnetic materials with strong perpendicular anisotropy offer stability and high recording density. To overcome the difficulty of writing media with a large coercivity, heat-assisted magnetic recording was developed, rapidly heating the media to the Curie temperature T before writing, followed by rapid cooling.

The critical current required to switch from one magnetic state to another depends on the geometry and the intrinsic properties of the materials used, which are difficult to control locally. Here, we demonstrate how focused helium ion beam irradiation can modulate the local magnetic anisotropy of a Co thin film at the microscopic scale.

Purely heat-induced single-pulse all-optical toggle switching has been demonstrated, but so far only in Gd-based amorphous ferrimagnet films. In this work, we demonstrate toggle switching in films of the half-metallic ferrimagnetic Heusler alloys MnRuGa, which have two crystallographically-inequivalent Mn sublattices.

Approaches for reducing the wall interactions include hydrophobic coatings, liquid-infused porous surfaces, nanoparticle surfactant jamming, changes to surface electronic structure, electrowetting, surface tension pinning and use of atomically flat channels. A better solution may be to avoid the solid walls altogether.

This study presents a new strategy to synthesize dispersible SmCo5 particles by co-precipitating a precursor containing amorphous Sm(OH)3 and coherent nanoscale Co(OH)2 and Ca(OH)2 crystallites. The Ca(OH)2 dehydrates into CaO which forms an isolation shell around the SmCo5 particles that prevents them sintering during the reaction at 860 °C.

Engineering ferromagnetism, by modulating its magnitude or anisotropy, is an important topic in the field of magnetism and spintronics. Among different types of magnetic materials, ferromagnetic insulators, in which magnetic moment unusually coexists with localized electrons, are of particular interest. Here, we report a remarkable interfacial enhancement of the ferromagnetism by adding one unit-cell LaAlO adjacent to an insulating LaMnO ultrathin film.
