National security concerns regarding radiological incidents, accidental or intentional in nature, have increased substantially over the past few years. A primary area of intense planning is the assessment of exposed individuals and timely medical management. However, exposed individuals who receive survivable radiation doses may develop delayed effects of acute radiation exposure many months or years later.

The anticancer effect of vitamin D in the fallopian tube epithelium (FTE), which is now thought to harbor the precursor cells for high grade ovarian cancer, is not known. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether vitamin D can inhibit carcinogenesis in the mogp-TAg fallopian tube (FT) ovarian cancer mouse model and examine underlying mechanisms.

Therapeutic agents capable of promoting recovery from radiation injury to the heart are limited. Growth hormone is linked to improved cardiac function following injury.

Unfortunately, effective treatments are extremely limited and definite diagnosis can only be made at autopsy. This is in part due to our limited understanding of the complex pathophysiology, including the various genetic, environmental, and metabolic contributing factors.

Previously we developed a protein biomarker-based FAST-DOSE bioassay system for biodosimetry. The aim of this study was to integrate an ELISA platform with two high-performing FAST-DOSE biomarkers, BAX and DDB2, and to construct machine learning models that employ a multiparametric biomarker strategy for enhancing the accuracy of exposure classification and radiation dose prediction.

An outstanding question is how inspiraling SMBHs get past the "final parsec" of separation, where they have a tendency to stall before GW emission alone can make the binary coalesce. We argue that dynamical friction from the dark matter (DM) spike surrounding the black holes is sufficient to resolve this puzzle, if the DM has a self-interaction cross section of order cm^{2}/g.

The aim of this study was to generate a reference for normal organ weights and percentage organ weights in AGMs of different age categories and sex.
Methods: The organ weights were compiled from 479 AGMs (285 females, 194 males) from 2004 to 2021.
The cell surface molecule CD40 is a member of the tumor necrosis factor receptor superfamily and is broadly expressed by immune cells including B cells, dendritic cells, and monocytes, as well as other normal cells and some malignant cells. CD40 is constitutively expressed on antigen-presenting cells, and ligation promotes functional maturation, leading to an increase in antigen presentation and cytokine production, and a subsequent increase in the activation of antigen-specific T cells. It is postulated that CD40 agonists can mediate both T cell-dependent and T cell-independent immune mechanisms of tumor regression in mice and patients.

Objective: To conduct extensive clinical, biochemical, immunochemical, and genetic studies in 3 patients with juvenile gigantomastia to determine causative biologic factors.
Methods: We examined clinical effects of estrogen by blockading estrogen synthesis or its action.
Cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) is a measure of cerebral small vessels' ability to respond to changes in metabolic demand and can be quantified using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) coupled with a vasoactive stimulus. Reduced CVR occurs with neurodegeneration and is associated with cognitive decline. While commonly measured in humans, few studies have evaluated CVR in animal models.

Since few therapeutics are available, safe and efficacious small molecules to mitigate radiation-induced injury need to be developed. Our previous study showed the synthetic TLR2/TLR6 ligand fibroblast stimulating lipopeptide (FSL-1) prolonged survival and provided MyD88-dependent mitigation of hematopoietic acute radiation syndrome (H-ARS) in mice.

T1-weighted and diffusion tensor magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are used to evaluate brain volume and white matter (WM) microstructure in neurodevelopmental and neurodegenerative conditions. The goal of this study was to evaluate the long-term effects of single-dose total-body irradiation (TBI) or TBI with 5% partial-body sparing on brain volumetrics and WM integrity in macaques.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFLate effects of total- or partial-body irradiation include chronic kidney injury (CKI), which increases morbidity and mortality. Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the gold standard measure of kidney function. Renal function markers, such as blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and serum creatinine (Cr), may not be higher than reference ranges until 50% or more of nephrons are affected.

We examined the testes from 143 irradiated and control male rhesus monkeys, who were part of the Radiation Late Effects Cohort over a four-year period. Irradiated animals were exposed to doses ranging from 3.

It is also needed for non-invasive and rapid assessment of the chronicity of human renal diseases.
Materials And Methods: We have used a non-human primate model of radiation nephropathy to develop a novel method of size-corrected CT imaging to quantify renal cortical fibrosis.
Neutrino emission in coincidence with gamma rays has been observed from the blazar TXS 0506+056 by the IceCube telescope. Neutrinos from the blazar had to pass through a dense spike of dark matter (DM) surrounding the central black hole. The observation of such a neutrino implies new upper bounds on the neutrino-DM scattering cross section as a function of DM mass.

SH2B1β and γ isoforms are expressed ubiquitously, whereas SH2B1α and δ isoforms are expressed primarily in the brain. Restoring SH2B1β driven by the neuron-specific enolase promoter largely reverses the metabolic phenotype of Sh2b1-null mice, suggesting crucial roles for neuronal SH2B1β in energy balance control.

Non-human primates (NHPs; here referring to rhesus and cynomolgus macaques) share broad similarities with humans including physiology, genetic homology, and importantly also immune cell populations, immune regulatory mechanisms, and protein targets for CIT. Furthermore, NHP naturally develop cancers such as colorectal and breast cancer with an incidence, pathology, and age pattern comparable to humans.

In this white paper, we survey the leading early-Universe mechanisms that may produce a detectable signal-including inflation, phase transitions, topological defects, as well as primordial black holes-and highlight the connections to fundamental physics. We review the complementarity with collider searches for new physics, and multimessenger probes of the large-scale structure of the Universe.
