American Samoa is experiencing rapid relative sea level rise due to increases in global sea level and significant post-2009 earthquake land subsidence, endangering homes and critical infrastructure. Wave and water-level observations collected over a fringing reef at Faga'itua Bay, American Samoa, in 2017 reveal depth-limited shoreline sea-swell wave heights over the range of conditions sampled. Using field data to calibrate a one-dimensional, phase-resolving nonhydrostatic wave model (SWASH), we examine the influence of water level on wave heights over the reef for a range of current and future sea levels.

Methylation-sensitive/-dependent restriction enzyme (MSRE/MDRE) PCR can be performed to detect hypomethylated or hypermethylated CpG sites. With the combined use of different tissue-specific CpG markers, MSRE/MDRE-PCR leads to tissue-specific methylation patterns (TSMPs), enabling the correlation of DNA samples to their source tissue. MSRE/MDRE assays can use the same platform as forensic STR typing and offer many advantages in the field of forensic body fluid detection.

A new redox polymer/bilirubin oxidase (BOD)-based gas diffusion electrode was designed to be implemented as the non-current and non-stability limiting biocathode in a glucose/O biofuel cell that acts as a self-powered glucose biosensor. For the proof-of-concept, a bioanode comprising the Os-complex modified redox polymer P(VI-co-AA)-[Os(bpy)Cl]Cl and FAD-dependent glucose dehydrogenase to oxidize the analyte was used. In order to develop an optimal O-reducing biocathode for the biofuel cell Mv-BOD as well as Bp-BOD and Mo-BOD have been tested in gas diffusion electrodes in direct electron transfer as well as in mediated electron transfer immobilized in the Os-complex modified redox polymer P(VI-co-AA)-[Os(diCl-bpy)]Cl.

However, these neuronal cells encompass heterogeneous subpopulations that release γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glutamate, or both neurotransmitters, whose functions are poorly defined. Developmental neurotoxicity (DNT) studies via dietary method of administration have been conducted for zeta-cypermethrin, a pyrethroid insecticide. The objectives of the current study were to determine the toxicokinetics (TK) of zeta-cypermethrin in postnatal day (PND) 11, 21 and 90 rats after gavage doses and use the internal exposure data from the DNT and TK studies to calculate an offspring NOAEL in mg/kg/day during lactation. The DNT studies showed that zeta-cypermethrin is not a developmental neurotoxicant.

Risk assessments of toxicants in aquatic environments are typically based on the evaluation of concentrations in water or sediment. However, concentrations in water are highly variable, while the body burden may provide a better time-integrated measure of pesticide exposure and potential effects in aquatic organisms. Protein prenylation is a post-translational modification that involves the addition of one or two isoprenoid groups to the C-terminus of selected proteins using either farnesyl diphosphate or geranylgeranyl diphosphate. Three crucial enzymatic steps are involved in the processing of prenylated proteins to yield the final mature product. The farnesylated dodecapeptide, a-factor, is particularly useful for studies of protein prenylation because it requires the identical three-step process to generate the same C-terminal farnesylated cysteine methyl ester substructure present in larger farnesylated proteins.
