A significant portion of the work of developing and validating methods for volatile organic compound (VOC) sampling in workplace atmospheres involves the use of laboratory-generated atmospheres. The sample variability was evaluated from the dynamic atmosphere generation system used for VOC atmosphere generation and sampling. Characterization of the bias and variability of samples was done for a variety of atmospheres containing neat n-heptane and mixtures of VOCs sampled on activated coconut shell charcoal.

Germline genetic testing for prostate cancer: Ordering trends in the era of expanded hereditary cancer screening recommendations.

Purpose: The availability of targeted therapies for advanced prostate cancer led to the expansion of national guidelines recommending germline genetic testing. The aim of this study was to describe recent trends in germline test ordering patterns for patients with prostate cancer.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective cohort analysis of patients with prostate cancer who underwent germline testing through a single commercial laboratory (Invitae Corporation) between 2015-2020 was performed.

Malignant bone tumors are commonly classified as pediatric or adolescent malignancies, and clinical trials for these diseases have generally focused on these populations. Of primary bone cancers, osteosarcoma is among the most common. Osteosarcoma has a bimodal age distribution, with the first peak occurring in patients from 10 to 14 years old, and the second peak occurring in patients older than 65, with about 25% of cases occurring in adults between 20 and 59 years old.

Herein we discuss multiple pre-clinical projects developed by our group that have been translated into patients at Massey Cancer Center. Introduction: Despite its minimally invasive nature, percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL ) may be associated with significant pain. Challenges in pain control may prevent timely discharge (and expose patients to adverse effects of opioid use). Dietary phosphorus consumption alters T cell populations, cytokine production, and bone volume in mice.

The intake of dietary phosphate far exceeds recommended levels; however, the long-term health consequences remain relatively unknown. Here, the chronic physiological response to sustained elevated and reduced dietary phosphate consumption was investigated in mice. Although serum phosphate levels were brought into homeostatic balance, the prolonged intake of a high-phosphate diet dramatically and negatively impacted bone volume; generated a sustained increase in the phosphate responsive circulating factors FGF23, PTH, osteopontin and osteocalcin; and produced a chronic low-grade inflammatory state in the BM, marked by increased numbers of T cells expressing IL-17a, RANKL, and TNF-α.

Implementation of a compulsory clinical pharmacist-led medication deprescribing intervention in high-risk seniors in the emergency department.

Objectives: The objective of this study was to assess the impact of an emergency department (ED) deprescribing intervention for geriatric adults. We hypothesized that pharmacist-led medication reconciliation for at-risk aging patients would increase the 60-day case rate of primary care provider (PCP) deprescribing of potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs).

Methods: This was a retrospective, before-and-after intervention pilot study conducted at an urban Veterans Affairs ED.

Bifidobacterium longum supplementation improves age-related delays in fracture repair.

Age-related delays in bone repair remains an important clinical issue that can prolong pain and suffering. It is now well established that inflammation increases with aging and that this exacerbated inflammatory response can influence skeletal regeneration. Recently, simple dietary supplementation with beneficial probiotic bacteria has been shown to influence fracture repair in young mice.
