Introduction: It is widely accepted that the higher the number of medications prescribed and taken by an individual, the higher the risk of poor health outcomes. We have investigated whether polypharmacy and comorbidities conveyed more risk of adverse health outcomes following COVID-19 infection (as a paradigm of serious viral infections in general) in people with type 1 diabetes (T1DM) or type 2 diabetes (T2DM).

Methods: The Greater Manchester Care Record (GMCR) is an integrated database of electronic health records containing data collected from 433 general practices in Greater Manchester.

Gout is a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by elevated uric acid levels in the blood, which can precipitate acute gout attacks in individuals with genetic susceptibility, existing medical conditions, and dietary influences. Genetic predispositions, comorbid medical conditions, nutritional choices, and environmental factors increasingly recognize the multifactorial etiology of the disease. Recent research has highlighted the potential of phytochemicals, particularly flavonoids, saponins, and alkaloids, to manage hyperuricemia (HUA) and its associated complications.

Neurological diseases (NDs), including neurodegenerative disorders and acute injuries, are a significant global health concern. The PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathway, a crucial signaling cascade, is responsible for the survival of cells, proliferation, and metabolism. Dysregulation of this pathway has been linked to neurological conditions, indicating its potential as a vital target for therapeutic approaches.

  • Endometriosis affects 1 in 10 women, often leading to surgery for persistent pain, but symptoms frequently recur post-operation, creating uncertainty about the most effective hormonal treatments.
  • A study was conducted across 34 UK hospitals to compare the effectiveness of long-acting progestogen therapy with the combined oral contraceptive pill in preventing pain recurrence and improving quality of life after surgery.
  • Results showed both treatment options reduced pain compared to pre-surgery levels, but no significant difference in effectiveness was found between the two, although fewer follow-up procedures were needed for those on long-acting progestogen.

Diabetes is a metabolic condition characterized by high blood glucose levels. Aquatic products like microalgae, bacteria, seagrasses, macroalgae, corals, and sponges have been investigated for potential anti-diabetic properties. We looked at polyphenols, peptides, pigments, and sterols, as well as other bioactive substances found in marine resources, to see if they could help treat or manage diabetes, in addition to describing the several treatment strategies that alter diabetes and its implications, such as inhibition of protein tyrosine phosphatases 1B (PTP1B), α-glucosidase, α-amylase, dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPP-IV), aldose reductase, lipase, glycogen synthase kinase 3β (GSK-3β), and insulin resistance prevention, promotion of liver antioxidant capacity, natural killer cell stimulant, anti-inflammatory actions, increased AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation and sugar and metabolism of the lipid, reducing oxidative stress, and β-pancreatic cell prevention.
