We present a novel type of magnetorheological material that allows one to restructure the magnetic particles inside the finished composite, tuning in situ the viscoelasticity and magnetic response of the material in a wide range using temperature and an applied magnetic field. The polymer medium is an A-g-B bottlebrush graft copolymer with side chains of two types: polydimethylsiloxane and polystyrene. At room temperature, the brush-like architecture provides the tissue mimetic softness and strain stiffening of the elastomeric matrix, which is formed through the aggregation of polystyrene side chains into aggregates that play the role of physical cross-links.

We report the case of a 13-year-old male who sustained a right shoulder injury while playing quarterback in an American football game. A noncontrast MRI scan showed evidence of a possible grade 1 SLAP tear (SLAP = superior labral anterior-posterior), and surgery was recommended. However, at the preoperative visit, the surgeon was suspicious that the main source of pain had been missed.

Tenosynovial giant cell tumors (TGCT) are a rare class of benign proliferative tumors that are classified according to their presentation: localized-type (L-TGCT) or diffuse-type (D-TGCT). TGCT is synonymous with pigmented villonodular synovitis (PVNS). We describe the unique case of a 56-year-old obese male with type 2 diabetes who had polymicrobial septic arthritis of his left knee joint with concurrent D-TGCT in the same knee.

Background: Chemotherapy-induced febrile neutropenia (FN) is prevented or minimized with granulocyte colony-stimulating factors (G-CSFs). Several G-CSF biosimilars are approved in the United States. The Biologics and Biosimilars Collective Intelligence Consortium (BBCIC) is a nonprofit initiative whose objective is to provide scientific evidence on real-world use and comparative safety and effectiveness of biologics and biosimilars using the BBCIC distributed research network (DRN).

Aim: One in three patients with Crohn's disease will develop a perianal fistula, but only a few achieve long-term healing. Treatment is both medical and surgical. Since there is no 'best' surgical procedure, patient preference is important in selecting the appropriate treatment for this condition.

Purpose: Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a disabling complication of many chemotherapies. We investigated the feasibility of using health plan claims and administrative data to identify CIPN occurrence by comparing patients who received neurotoxic and non-neurotoxic chemotherapies.

Methods: The sample included over 53,000,000 patients from two regional and one national insurer in the USA (> 400,000 exposed to chemotherapy).

Purpose: Total laryngectomy and end tracheal stoma formation are often required to treat advanced laryngeal cancer. Resources on the internet are commonly accessed by patients as a source of healthcare information. YouTube™, the most popular video-hosting website, is one such resource.

Aim: YouTube™ is an open-access, nonpeer-reviewed video-hosting site and is used as a source of publicly available healthcare information. This study aimed to assess the thematic content of the most viewed videos relating to surgery and Crohn's disease and to explore the viewer interactions with these videos.

Method: A search of YouTube™ was carried out using one search string.

Background: With the range of health information online, assessing the resources that patients access may improve the content of preoperative information. Our aim was to assess the content of the most viewed videos on YouTube related to surgery for ulcerative colitis (UC).

Methods: YouTube was searched for videos containing information on surgery for UC.

Purpose: The Heart Protection Study 2-Treatment of HDL to Reduce the Incidence of Vascular Events (HPS2-THRIVE) trial found higher incidence rates of adverse reactions, including bleeding, in patients receiving the combination of extended-release niacin and laropiprant versus placebo. It is not known whether these adverse events are attributable to laropiprant, not approved in the USA, or to extended-release niacin. We compared rates of major gastrointestinal bleeding and intracranial hemorrhage among initiators of extended-release niacin and initiators of fenofibrate.

Background: Guidance from the Royal College of Surgeons advocates patient use of on-line resources to assist in decision making. Our aim was to assess the quality of on-line resources to facilitate decision making for patients considering surgery for ulcerative colitis (UC).

Methods: We undertook a systematic review based on PRISMA guidelines.

Washington State has some of the highest percentages of school immunization exemptions in the country. We compared school immunization records in a rural school district in Pierce County, Washington, to immunization records in the state immunization information system (IIS) and parent-held records. Correcting school immunization records resulted in an increase in the number of students classified as fully immunized from 1,189 to 1,564 (p < .

Background: Coinfection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) has been shown to influence the natural history of hepatitis C infection.

Objective: Our interest was to determine if HIV coinfection influences the prevalence of cryoglobulinemia in hepatitis C virus (HCV) infected persons.

Study Design: A total of 384 HCV RNA positive (234 HIV-infected and 150 HIV-uninfected) participants were tested at two visits, 18 months apart, for HCV and HIV RNA, CD4, and liver enzyme levels.

A potential public health concern is the reported detection of the human T-lymphotropic virus (HTLV) tax gene in the lymphocytes of up to 11% of a low-risk group of New York City blood donors (NYBD). This study aimed to independently confirm the prevalence of HTLV tax sequences in 293 NYBD. All NYBD tested negative for antibodies to HTLV types 1 and 2 and HTLV Tax.

Primary prostate and cervical epithelial cells and epithelial cell lines were examined for human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection or transmission to peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Neither cell-free nor cell-associated HIV-1 infected primary epithelial cells or cell lines. Pretreatment of HIV-1 to enhance CD4-independent entry did not augment infection.

Of 60 surgically removed multicystic, dysplastic kidneys examined for the presence of nodular renal blastema only 1 (2 per cent) had blastematous elements. Of the 60 patients 35 were from the authors' personal series and they were examined in clinical detail. The results of this study and those in the literature are discussed in relation to the over-all management of the asymptomatic multicystic, dysplastic kidney.
