Vascular injuries operated on during a 30-year period (1955-1984) were analyzed. There has been significant increase of such injuries, particularly the iatrogenic types. The total incidence per 100,000 population and year rose from 11.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFast atom bombardment (FAB) of phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylethanolamine, cardiolipin, phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylglycerol produces a limited number of very informative negative ions. Especially significant is the formation of (M-H)-ions and ions that correspond to the carboxylate portions of these molecules. FAB desorption in combination with collisional activation allows for characterization of fragmentation and determination of structural features.

CSF somatostatin immunoreactivity was 166 +/- 5.3 (SFM) pg/ml in controls at noon and rose around midnight to 208 +/- 3.

The carbon dioxide response curves were depressed in a time-dependent, prolonged and biphasic manner.

Displacement from human plasma proteins of lidocaine by disopyramide was investigated in serum from nine patients receiving lidocaine treatment because of severe ventricular arrhythmias. From each patient disopyramide in concentrations of 5.9 and 14.

The dosage was adjusted until optimal response was obtained. The effect was unsatisfactory in 4 cases and side effects intervened in another 2.

The case histories of three patients with tracheo-innominate artery fistula are presented, and one is a longterm survivor. The haemorrhage can be controlled by hyperinflation of the cuff of the tracheostomy tube or by direct digital compression of the artery.

Both strains were pectinophilic; that is, they utilized as fermentable substrates for growth only pectin and a few related compounds. The two species differed significantly from each other in guanine plus cytosine content of the DNA, in substrate utilization patterns, and in other phenotypic characteristics.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFFast atom bombardment (FAB) desorption of phosphatidylserine and various phosphatidylcholines produces a limited number of very informative negative ions. Especially significant is the formation of (M-H)- ions for phosphatidylserine, a compound which does not yield informative high mass ions by other ionization methods. Phosphatidylcholines do not yield (M-H)- ions but instead produce three characteristic high mass ions, (M-CH+3)-, [M-HN(CH3)+3]- and [M-HN(CH3)+3-C2H2]-.

To attack the problem of nonunion following trochanteric osteotomy, the authors apply several different wiring techniques. To quantify the efficacy of these approaches, they have reviewed 804 consecutive total hip arthroplasties in which the greater trochanter was osteotomized, including 725 primary total hip arthroplasties.

Fast atom bombardment desorption of bile salts produces negative ions which show little fragmentation. The lack of fragmentation limits the utility of the method for resolving questions regarding specific structural features. This paper is a report of negative ion fast atom bombardment mass spectra and collision-activated decomposition spectra of cholate, chenodeoxycholate, lithocholate, taurocholate, taurochenodeoxycholate, taurolithocholate, 3 beta-ol-5-cholenate, taurolithocholate-3-sulfate and glycolithocholate-3-sulfate.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA three-dimensional finite element stress analysis was employed to calculate stresses in a distal tibia modelled with three simple total ankle joint replacement tibial components. The bone was modelled as a composite structure consisting of cortical and trabecular bone in which the trabecular bone was either homogeneous with a constant modulus of elasticity or heterogenous with experimentally determined heterogeneity. The results were sensitive to variations in trabecular bone material property distributions, with lower stresses being calculated in the heterogeneous model.

Samples were grouped according to bacterial isolates recovered and the effects of bacterial species and whey on bacterial growth rates were analysed. Different strains of bacteria and different whey samples gave highly significant differences in bacterial replication rates.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFInterrelationships between N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (indicating cellular damage) and antitrypsin (indicating increased permeability between the blood and milk compartments) were evaluated in 1,411 quarter-milk samples collected during routine herd surveys. N-Acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase was antitrypsin, whereas, in more severe mastitis, antitrypsin had a more constant deflection. The sensitivity of both determinants was associated with the virulence of bacteria.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA mammalian transmission-expression vector has been constructed based on the plasmid pBR322 and using the transcriptional signals from the Akv murine leukemia virus (AkvMuLV) to control the expression of the neo gene. The transmission vector pL psi PLneo, when transfected into the psi 2 cell line, confers G-418 resistance on recipient cell clones which produce viral particles encapsidating the transcripts of the vector. Cultures of such clones produce viral particles of titers up to 10(5) cfu/ml.

Tibial bone was considerably weaker than talar bone (40% on average). An area of peak bone strength located posteriorly and medially to the center of the joint was found in most joints.
