Background: Patients undergoing major lower extremity amputation (LEA) due to vascular disease face an increased risk of post-surgery anxiety and depression. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), widely used to identify anxiety and depressive symptoms, has been translated into Danish, but its content validity has not previously been tested in LEA patients. This study aims to test the validity and reliability of HADS in this population.

Background: There is no consensus on the appropriate duration of postoperative antibiotics for complicated appendicitis in children. Commonly used antibiotic endpoints include normalization of white blood cell count (WBC) or completion of a minimum number of prespecified treatment days. We compared clinical outcomes resulting from varying postoperative antibiotic protocols for complicated appendicitis in children.

Characterisation of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis: A comparative study using microCT and radiography in age-matched controls.

Background: Equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH) is a painful disorder primarily affecting the incisor teeth of horses over 15 years of age. Clinical signs of the disease include prehension problems, halitosis and in severe cases weight loss. The disease predominately affects the reserve crown and presents as a loss of dental tissue and excessive build-up of cementum.

Polycystic ovary syndrome and risk of differentiated thyroid cancer: A nationwide, register-based cohort study based on Danish health data.

Objectives: To evaluate the association between polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and the risk of differentiated and papillary thyroid cancer.

Methods: We included all individuals assigned female at birth and born during 1962-1996 in Denmark. Information on vital status, PCOS- and cancer diagnoses, and covariates were attained from various Danish nationwide registers.

Despite this robust body of research, less is known about which children in the family tend to be favored or less favored by parents. The present study examined favored treatment as predicted by birth order, gender, temperament, and personality.

Background: Respiratory infections substantially impact pediatric health. The COVID-19 pandemic introduced widespread non-pharmaceutical interventions, which influenced the incidence of common respiratory infections. This comprehensive study investigates the impact of these interventions on the incidence of respiratory syncytial virus, influenza, and invasive pneumococcal disease in Danish children.

Background: Lowering the age for receiving the first dose of a measles-containing vaccine (MCV1) has been suggested to close the emerging immunity gap in infants. However, tolerability remains one of the main concerns for vaccine-hesitant parents. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of reactogenicity following MCV1 in infants under 12 months of age.

Predicting early cessation of exclusive breastfeeding using machine learning techniques.

Background: Identification of mother-infant pairs predisposed to early cessation of exclusive breastfeeding is important for delivering targeted support. Machine learning techniques enable development of transparent prediction models that enhance clinical applicability. We aimed to develop and validate two models to predict cessation of exclusive breastfeeding within one month among infants born after 35 weeks gestation using machine learning techniques.

Inflammation and response to bacterial infection as potential drivers of equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis: A proteomics insight.

Background: Equine dental diseases significantly impact a horse's overall health, performance and quality of life. They can result in secondary infections and digestive disturbances, potentially leading to colic. A recently described disease affecting the incisors of horses is equine odontoclastic tooth resorption and hypercementosis (EOTRH).

Invasive mechanical ventilation strategies, adjuvants treatments and adverse events among ICU patients with COVID-19 in Denmark.

Aim: To describe the use of invasive mechanical ventilation core strategies, adjuvant treatments and the occurrence of barotrauma and prolonged ventilation in ICU patients with COVID-19 in Denmark, retrospectively.

Methods: All ICUs admitting COVID-19 patients in Denmark from 10 March 2020 to 2 April 2021 were invited to participate. All patients with COVID-19 who received invasive mechanical ventilation were included and data was retrospectively collected from electronic patient records.

Optimized chelator and nanoparticle strategies for high-activity Pd-loaded biodegradable brachytherapy seeds.

Background: Brachytherapy (BT) is routinely used in the treatment of various cancers. Current BT relies on the placement of large sources of radioactivity at the tumor site, requiring applicators that may cause local traumas and lesions. Further, they suffer from inflexibility in where they can be placed and some sources reside permanently in the body, causing potential long-term discomfort.

The Campylobacter prevalence in free-ranging broiler flocks is usually higher than in conventional flocks, and effective interventions for this production type are needed. This study aimed to investigate the on-farm Campylobacter-reducing effect of feeding three feed additives or a water additive to broilers from hatching to slaughter. Newly hatched Ranger Gold broilers (n = 140) were randomly placed into five cages (n = 28/cage) within a flock of 6,000 broilers.

Observer reliability in counting erythrocyte ghost cells and impact of short-term storage of canine and feline blood samples.

The presence of erythrocyte ghost cells (EG) in blood smears indicates intravascular haemolysis or in-vitro haemolysis. However, observer reliability in detection of EG has not been documented. Immediate blood smear preparation is advised but may not always be practical.

This is especially true for the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ), which is the area where sea ice is affected by incoming ocean waves.

We report the complete genome sequence of a penicillin-resistant subsp. isolate, AJ79, from a tonsillitis patient. The AJ79 genome consists of a chromosome (2,440,359 bp) and plasmid (9,887 bp), providing insights into the genetic basis of penicillin resistance in and its implications for treating tonsillitis.

Heterogeneity in Pancreatitis: Recognizing Heterogeneity and Its Role in the Management of Pancreatitis. Summary of a National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Workshop.

Both the clinical management and study of recurrent acute pancreatitis (RAP) and chronic pancreatitis (CP) is complicated by significant heterogeneity in the etiology, mechanisms, symptoms, and complications of pancreatitis. The National Institutes of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Disease (NIDDK) recently convened a workshop to address current knowledge and knowledge gaps in the field. Preclinical models that better replicate human disease are important for development of new therapies.

Understanding paralogous epilepsy-associated GABA receptor variants: Clinical implications, mechanisms, and potential pitfalls.

Recent discoveries have revealed that genetic variants in γ-aminobutyric acid type A (GABA) receptor subunits can lead to both gain-of-function (GOF) and loss-of-function (LOF) receptors. GABA receptors, however, have a pseudosymmetrical pentameric assembly, and curiously diverse functional outcomes have been reported for certain homologous variants in paralogous genes (paralogous variants). To investigate this, we assembled a cohort of 11 individuals harboring paralogous M1 proline missense variants in , , and Seven mutations (α1, α1, β2, β3, β3, γ2, and γ2) in α1β2/3γ2 receptors were analyzed using electrophysiological examinations and molecular dynamics simulations.

Antiviral combination treatment of SARS-CoV-2 after repeated treatment failures of remdesivir monotherapy: A case report.

Immunocompromised patients infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) can have a longer duration of viral shedding and persistence of symptoms. The optimal treatment strategy for these patients remains to be established. This case describes a male in his late sixties with follicular lymphoma and persistent symptoms of infection with SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.

Circulating biomarkers of macrophage activation in different stages of chronic pancreatitis: A pilot study.

Objectives: Activation of type M2 macrophages has been implicated in the pathogenesis of chronic pancreatitis (CP). In a clinical pilot study, we investigated blood-based markers of macrophage activation at different stages of CP.

Methods: We performed a cross-sectional analysis of prospectively collected plasma samples from healthy controls and patients with suspected or definitive CP according to the M-ANNHEIM criteria.

Stargardt disease (STGD), the leading cause of inherited childhood blindness, is primarily caused by mutations in the ABCA4 gene; yet, the underlying mechanisms of photoreceptor degeneration remain elusive, partly due to limitations in existing animal disease models. To expand our understanding, we mutated the human ABCA4 paralogues abca4a and abca4b in zebrafish, which has a cone-rich retina. Our study unveiled striking dysmorphology and elongation of cone outer segments (COS) in abca4a;abca4b double mutants, alongside reduced phagocytosis by the retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE).
