It takes a village to raise a child- A multidisciplinary approach to promoting paediatric health literacy in cystic fibrosis.

Background: In Northern Ireland, approximately 550 people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF) attend the regional paediatric and adult centres within the Belfast Health and Social Care Trust. This autosomal recessive chronic condition necessitates regular clinical monitoring and a high treatment burden, as well as time implications for the maintenance of respiratory devices. Development of health literacy skills at an early age and promoting children with CF (CwCF) to take an active role in their healthcare has many advantages relating to their long-term self-care in preparation for transition from paediatric to adult care, decision-making and partnership engagement with the CF-multidisciplinary team (CF-MDT).

Improving health literacy and stakeholder-directed knowledge of One Health through analysis of readability: a cross sectional infodemiology study.

Background: The One Health approach involves collaboration across several sectors, including public health, veterinary and environmental sectors in an integrated manner. These sectors may be disparate and unrelated, however to succeed, all stakeholders need to understand what the other stakeholders are communicating. Likewise, it is important that there is public acceptance and support of One Health approaches, which requires effective communication between professional and institutional organisations and the public.

Macrovascular blood flow and microvascular cerebrovascular reactivity are regionally coupled in adolescence.

Cerebrovascular imaging assessments are particularly challenging in adolescent cohorts, where not all modalities are appropriate, and rapid brain maturation alters hemodynamics at both macro- and microvascular scales. In a preliminary sample of healthy adolescents (n = 12, 8-25 years), we investigated relationships between 4D flow MRI-derived blood velocity and blood flow in bilateral anterior, middle, and posterior cerebral arteries and BOLD cerebrovascular reactivity (CVR) in associated vascular territories. As hypothesized, higher velocities in large arteries are associated with an earlier response to a vasodilatory stimulus (cerebrovascular reactivity delay) in the downstream territory.

There is a paucity of data describing the readability of patient-facing TB information for service users. The aim of this study was to calculate the readability of multiple global TB information sources.

This invited commentary reflects on Wandersman and Scheier's (2024) call for a more evidence-based model of training and technical assistance (i.e. TTA or implementation support).

The Influence of Material Properties and Wall Thickness on Predicted Wall Stress in Ascending Aortic Aneurysms: A Finite Element Study.

Purpose: Finite element analysis (FEA) has been used to predict wall stress in ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA) in order to evaluate risk of dissection or rupture. Patient-specific FEA requires detailed information on ATAA geometry, loading conditions, material properties, and wall thickness. Unfortunately, measuring aortic wall thickness and mechanical properties non-invasively poses a significant challenge, necessitating the use of non-patient-specific data in most FE simulations.

Lack of correlation between surface water area and infection with and the non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTMs) in patients with cystic fibrosis (CF).

Background: People with cystic fibrosis (CF) may develop clinically significant chronic respiratory infections with (PA) and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). Open water has been suggested to be an important source for continuous or intermittent exposure to these pathogens. To date, there has been a paucity of studies examining the relationship between chronic PA and NTM infection in CF patients and surfaces waters, including blue spaces.

A Multi Comparison of 8 Different Intraocular Lens Biometry Formulae, Including a Machine Learning Thin Lens Formula (MM) and an Inbuilt Anterior Segment Optical Coherence Tomography Ray Tracing Formula.

A comparison of the accuracy of intraocular lens (IOL) power calculation formulae, including SRK/T, HofferQ, Holladay 1, Haigis, MM, Barrett Universal II (BUII), Emmetropia Verifying Optical (EVO), and AS-OCT ray tracing, was performed. One hundred eyes implanted with either the Rayone EMV RAO200E (Rayner Intraocular Lenses Limited, Worthing, UK) or the Artis Symbiose (Cristalens Industrie, Lannion, France) IOL were included. Biometry was obtained using IOLMaster 700 (Carl Zeiss Meditec AG, Jena, Germany) and MS-39 AS-OCT (CSO, Firenze, Italy).

Background/purpose: Meibomian glands are sebaceous glands that release meibum onto the ocular surface; enhancing the quality and quantity of meibum secretions has been proven to improve signs and symptoms of evaporative dry eye (EDE) and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). This study aimed to evaluate and compare the efficacy of a heated eye mask (HEM) and eyelid massage device EyePeace (EP) in alleviating signs and symptoms of evaporative dry eye.

Methods: Forty dry eye participants were recruited in a prospective, contralateral-eye trial study.

Power-Law Entanglement and Hilbert Space Fragmentation in Nonreciprocal Quantum Circuits.

Quantum circuits utilizing measurement to evolve a quantum wave function offer a new and rich playground to engineer unconventional entanglement dynamics. Here, we introduce a hybrid, nonreciprocal setup featuring a quantum circuit, whose updates are conditioned on the state of a classical dynamical agent. In our example the circuit is represented by a Majorana quantum chain controlled by a classical N-state Potts chain undergoing pair flips.

Readability of Patient-Facing Information of Antibiotics Used in the WHO Short 6-Month and 9-Month All Oral Treatment for Drug-Resistant Tuberculosis.

Objectives: Readability of patient-facing information of oral antibiotics detailed in the WHO all oral short (6 months, 9 months) has not been described to date. The aim of this study was therefore to examine (i) how readable patient-facing TB antibiotic information is compared to readability reference standards and (ii) if there are differences in readability between high-incidence countries versus low-incidence countries.

Methods: Ten antibiotics, including bedaquiline, clofazimine, ethambutol, ethionamide, isoniazid, levofloxacin, linezolid, moxifloxacin, pretomanid, pyrazinamide, were investigated.

Automated intracranial vessel segmentation of 4D flow MRI data in patients with atherosclerotic stenosis using a convolutional neural network.

Introduction: Intracranial 4D flow MRI enables quantitative assessment of hemodynamics in patients with intracranial atherosclerotic disease (ICAD). However, quantitative assessments are still challenging due to the time-consuming vessel segmentation, especially in the presence of stenoses, which can often result in user variability. To improve the reproducibility and robustness as well as to accelerate data analysis, we developed an accurate, fully automated segmentation for stenosed intracranial vessels using deep learning.

Case Report: The Conundrum of What to Pick? Antibiotic Susceptibility Variability in in Cystic Fibrosis: Implications for Antibiotic Susceptibility Testing and Treatment.

Within cystic fibrosis microbiology, there is often mismatch between the antibiotic susceptibility result of an isolated bacterial pathogen and the clinical outcome, when the patient is treated with the same antibiotic. The reasoning for this remains largely elusive. Antibiotic susceptibility to four antibiotics (ceftazidime, meropenem, minocycline and trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) was determined in consecutive isolates ( = 11) from an adult cystic fibrosis patient, over a 63 month period.

Carriage of Neisseria meningitidis (meningococci) in the sputum of people with cystic fibrosis (CF): occupational health risks and mitigating interventions for physiotherapists.

Objectives: To estimate the carriage of Neisseira meningitidis (meningococci) in expectorated sputum from people with cystic fibrosis (CF) and to evaluate potential ramifications of such carriage for the health and (NM) wellbeing of physiotherapists performing airway clearance techniques.

Design: Descriptive observational study.

Main Outcome Measures: Meningococcal carriage rate, CFTR mutation type and time to first meningococcal culture were determined.

Topological Quantum Synchronization of Fractionalized Spins.

The gapped symmetric phase of the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki model exhibits fractionalized spins at the ends of an open chain. We show that breaking SU(2) symmetry and applying a global spin-lowering dissipator achieves synchronization of these fractionalized spins. Additional local dissipators ensure convergence to the ground state manifold.

Inferring causal cell types of human diseases and risk variants from candidate regulatory elements.

The heritability of human diseases is extremely enriched in candidate regulatory elements (cRE) from disease-relevant cell types. Critical next steps are to infer which and how many cell types are truly causal for a disease (after accounting for co-regulation across cell types), and to understand how individual variants impact disease risk through single or multiple causal cell types. Here, we propose CT-FM and CT-FM-SNP, two methods that leverage cell-type-specific cREs to fine-map causal cell types for a trait and for its candidate causal variants, respectively.

Accuracy of Toric Intraocular Lens Formulas With Measured Posterior Corneal Astigmatism of Different Orientations.

Purpose: To assess whether the use of measured posterior corneal astigmatism (PCA) values improves the prediction accuracy of toric intraocular lens power formulas, compared to predicted PCA values, when the orientation of the steep axis of PCA is non-vertical.

Design: Retrospective observational cohort study.

Methods: Four hundred eighteen eyes of 344 patients were included in the study.

Attitudes to cross infection, nebuliser hygiene and antimicrobial resistance in people with cystic fibrosis: Results of an international survey.

Background: Respiratory infection is a major cause of disease severity in people with cystic fibrosis (PwCF). This project aimed to establish the CF community's opinion regarding cross infection (CI), nebuliser hygiene, antimicrobial resistance, personal impact of microbiological findings and the role of the microbiology laboratory.

Methods: A questionnaire was completed anonymously (n = 280; PwCF (n = 128), parents (n = 123); friends/family/carers/charity personnel (n = 29)) from 13 countries.
