Objective: Surgical administrative chief residents (ACRs) play essential roles in residency training programs, including resident advocates, conflict negotiators, and scheduling managers. Despite their varied and important jobs, surgical ACRs receive very little training or introduction to the role.

Design: We describe here the creation and implementation of an Administrative Chief Resident Workshop developed for the Association of Program Directors in Surgery (APDS) to familiarize chief residents with their roles in scheduling and conflict negotiation.

Elevated youth irritability is characterized by increased proneness to frustration relative to peers when rewards are blocked, and is a transdiagnostic symptom that predicts multiple forms of psychopathology and poorer socioeconomic outcomes in adulthood. Although mechanistic models propose that irritability is the result of aberrant reward-related brain function, youth irritability as it relates to multiple components of reward processes, including reward anticipation, gain, and loss, has yet to be examined in large, population-based samples. Data from the Adolescent Brain and Cognitive Development (ABCD) baseline sample (N = 5923) was used to examine associations between youth irritability (measured by parent-report) and reward-related brain activation and connectivity in a large, preadolescent sample.

Focal cortical dysplasia (FCD) is a common cause of focal epilepsy that typically results from brain mosaic mutations in the mTOR cell signaling pathway. To identify new FCD genes, we developed an CRISPRi screen in human neurons and used FACS enrichment based on the FCD biomarker, phosphorylated S6 ribosomal protein (pS6). Using whole-genome (110,000 gRNAs) and candidate (129 gRNAs) libraries, we discovered 12 new genes that significantly increase pS6 levels.

Brain organoid methods are complicated by multiple rosette structures and morphological variability. We have developed a human brain organoid technique that generates self-organizing, single-rosette cortical organoids (SOSR-COs) with reproducible size and structure at early timepoints. Rather than patterning a 3-dimensional embryoid body, we initiate brain organoid formation from a 2-dimensional monolayer of human pluripotent stem cells patterned with small molecules into neuroepithelium and differentiated to cells of the developing dorsal cerebral cortex.

A visible-light organophotocatalytic [2+2] cycloaddition of electron-deficient styrenes is described. Photocatalytic [2+2] cycloadditions are typically performed with electron-rich styrene derivatives or α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds, and with transition-metal-based catalysts. Electrical stimulation (ES) promotes healing of chronic epidermal wounds and delays degeneration of articular cartilage.
