Fatigue of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) tissues reflects the effects of magnitude (energy density; ED) and frequency of loading (jaw muscle duty factor; DF). This observational study measured these variables and tested for differences in mechanobehavior scores (MBS = ED × DF) and component variables in subjects with and without TMJ disc displacement (±D). In accordance with Institutional Review Board and STROBE guidelines, written informed consent was obtained, and examination and imaging protocols identified eligible adult subjects.

Introduction: A subset of interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) patients experience recurrent urinary tract infection (rUTI) associated with symptom flares. Recurrent UTI subjects with associated IC/BPS were enrolled in the first North American early clinical experience trial evaluating a new sublingual UTI preventative vaccine, MV140. It has been shown that women with rUTI develop an imbalance in the T helper 1 and 2 (Th2 over-expression) in the bladder mucosa.

Article Synopsis
  • The objective of the review is to evaluate how well current research on temporomandibular disorders (TMDs), particularly chronic myofascial pain and early onset degenerative TMJ disease, applies to real-world situations.
  • The study examined existing methods related to TMD research, focusing on muscle behavior, neuromechanics, and the autonomic nervous system, while highlighting the need for more relevant sampling and data analysis techniques.
  • Results indicate that recent findings challenge previous beliefs about the link between muscle clenching and TMD pain, suggesting that personalized assessments based on biological rhythms are necessary for effective treatment interventions.

Article Synopsis
  • Interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS) causes ongoing pain and frequent bathroom trips, hurting people's daily lives and sleep quality.
  • Poor sleep can make this pain worse, and things like feeling sad or overly worried about pain might play a role in the problem.
  • A study with 74 people confirmed that worse sleep can lead to more pain, mainly because of feelings of sadness and worry about pain, suggesting that these emotions are important to consider for treatment.

We report resolution of right-sided pulsatile tinnitus in a 44-year-old male who underwent stapedectomy for fenestral otosclerosis. Initial workup revealed a mixed hearing loss and absent stapedial reflexes consistent with ossicular fixation. CT angiography demonstrated near complete stenosis of the left-sided transverse and sigmoid sinuses and dominant contralateral venous outflow.

Introduction: This study tested orthognathic surgery effects on temporomandibular joint (TMJ) compressive stresses.

Methods: Pre- (T1) and post-surgery (T2) cone-beam computed tomography images were collected from consenting subjects aged ≥15 years. Anatomical data were used to measure surgical changes in anteroposterior mandibular position and occlusal plane angle (FH-OP), estimate condylar loading areas (mm ) and calculate T1 and T2 TMJ and jaw muscle forces (N) during canine biting via numerical modelling.

Uncomplicated recurrent urinary tract infections (rUTIs) in women are associated with episodic bothersome symptoms and have a significant impact on the mental and physical quality of life. Treatment with antibiotics (short- and long-term dosing) results in acute and chronic side effects and costs and promotes general antibiotic resistance. Improved nonantibiotic management of rUTI in women represents a true, unmet medical need.

Chronic pain associated with temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) may reflect muscle mechanoreceptor afferent barrage and dysregulated sensory processing. This observational study tested for associations between Characteristic Pain Intensity (CPI), physical symptoms (Patient Health Questionnaire-15 [PHQ-15]), and cumulative jaw muscle motor load (mV*s). In accordance with institutional review board oversight and Strengthening the Reporting of Observational Studies in Epidemiology guidelines, adult subjects gave informed consent and were identified via Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC-TMD) examination and research protocols.

Introduction: To understand the role of the urinary microbiome in disease states and interpret non-culture-based diagnostic urine testing of midstream urine specimens, we must have a better understanding of the urinary microbiome in asymptomatic, healthy individuals. We examined the impact of gender, age, and menopausal status on the healthy human urinary microbiome in asymptomatic control subjects enrolled in the multi-institution National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) Multidisciplinary Approach to the Study of Chronic Pelvic Pain Network (MAPP) study.

Methods: Asymptomatic, healthy controls, recruited to be ageand sex-matched to patients in the Trans-MAPP Epidemiology and Phenotyping Study, provided midstream urine collection for polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-electrospray ionization mass spectrometry identification of urinary microbiota.

Introduction: Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and associated lower urinary tract symptoms are highly prevalent in the aging male. Similarly, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is increasing worldwide, with mounting evidence that these two common conditions share more than age as a predisposing factor. The objective of this study was to determine if medical management of BPH is associated with an increased risk of new-onset diabetes mellitus (DM) in routine care.
