With the approval of antifibrotic medications to treat patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and progressive pulmonary fibrosis, radiologists have an integral role in diagnosing these entities and guiding treatment decisions. CT features of early pulmonary fibrosis include irregular thickening of interlobular septa, pleura, and intralobular linear structures, with subsequent progression to reticular abnormality, traction bronchiectasis or bronchiolectasis, and honeycombing. CT patterns of fibrotic lung disease can often be reliably classified on the basis of the CT features and distribution of the condition.

Patients with progressive fibrosing interstitial lung diseases (PF-ILDs) carry a poor prognosis and have limited therapeutic options. A hallmark feature is fibroblast resistance to apoptosis, leading to their persistence, accumulation, and excessive deposition of extracellular matrix. A complex balance of the B cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2) protein family controlling the intrinsic pathway of apoptosis and fibroblast reliance on antiapoptotic proteins has been hypothesized to contribute to this resistant phenotype.

The heavy electron Kondo liquid is an emergent state of condensed matter that displays universal behavior independent of material details. Properties of the heavy electron liquid are best probed by NMR Knight shift measurements, which provide a direct measure of the behavior of the heavy electron liquid that emerges below the Kondo lattice coherence temperature as the lattice of local moments hybridizes with the background conduction electrons. Because the transfer of spectral weight between the localized and itinerant electronic degrees of freedom is gradual, the Kondo liquid typically coexists with the local moment component until the material orders at low temperatures.

Oxidative damage is a naturally occurring process where reactive oxygen species (ROS) attack and disrupt normal cellular function; however, these effects become elevated during a stress event, such as ischemia/reperfusion or seizure. One result of oxidative stress is lipid peroxidation, where ROS attack free unsaturated fatty acids forming lipid hydorperoxides, which then break down to form secondary products acrolein, 4-hydroxynonenal, and malondialdehyde (MDA) resulting in irreversible membrane damage and ultimately cell death. Described here is a CE-fluorescence method for the determination of MDA in conjunction with in vivo microdialysis sampling.

An electromechanical process was developed to electrofuse human and nonhuman cultured cells directly to rabbit corneal epithelial tissue in vitro and in situ. This new process was utilized successfully to incorporate functional gonococcal membrane attachment receptors from human lymphoma cells into superficial rabbit corneal epithelium. Thus, cell-tissue electrofusion biotechnology may be employed to establish unique and novel animal models for investigating receptor-mediated processes in vivo.
