Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa) is an important crop for the future challenges of food and nutrient security. Deep characterization of quinoa diversity is needed to support the agronomic improvement and adaptation of quinoa as its worldwide cultivation expands. In this study, we report the construction of chromosome-scale genome assemblies of eight quinoa accessions covering the range of phenotypic and genetic diversity of both lowland and highland quinoas.

Article Synopsis
  • Penstemons are flowering plants native to the Rocky Mountains, often used in urban landscaping, but elite varieties struggle with abiotic stresses like drought and salinity.
  • Firecracker penstemon (Penstemon eatonii) is more resilient to these stresses and can hybridize with other penstemon species, offering a way to create more tolerant cultivars.
  • Researchers sequenced the genome of a firecracker penstemon from Utah and additional accessions, creating the most complete penstemon genome assembly so far.

Hip arthroscopy continues to increase in popularity and has an ever-expanding range of indications; however, the steep learning curve introduces significant risk of iatrogenic chondrolabral injury when accessing the joint and establishing arthroscopic portals. This article presents a technique for establishing the modified midanterior portal and is particularly useful when the available space is tight. We present "the air-lift" as a safe and simple adjunct to standard portal creation when performing hip arthroscopy in the supine position.

Background: Observational studies suggest that total testosterone (TT) and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) may have beneficial effects on lung function, but these findings might be spurious due to confounding and reverse causation. We addressed these limitations by using multivariable Mendelian randomisation (MVMR) to investigate the independent causal effects of TT and SHBG on lung function.

Methods: We first identified genetic instruments by performing genome-wide association analyses of TT and SHBG in the large UK Biobank, separately in males and females.

Background: Gas cooking is an important source of indoor air pollutants, and there is some limited evidence that it might adversely be associated with respiratory health. Using repeated cross-sectional data from the multi-centre international European Community Respiratory Health Survey, we assessed whether adults using gas cookers have increased risk of respiratory symptoms compared to those using electric cookers and tested whether there was effect modification by a priori selected factors.

Methods: Data on respiratory symptoms and gas cooking were collected from participants at 26-55 and 38-67 years (median time between examinations 11.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a common inflammatory skin condition and prior genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified 71 associated loci. In the current study we conducted the largest AD GWAS to date (discovery N = 1,086,394, replication N = 3,604,027), combining previously reported cohorts with additional available data. We identified 81 loci (29 novel) in the European-only analysis (which all replicated in a separate European analysis) and 10 additional loci in the multi-ancestry analysis (3 novel).

Background: Understanding the natural history of abnormal spirometric patterns at different stages of life is critical to identify and optimise preventive strategies. We aimed to describe characteristics and risk factors of restrictive and obstructive spirometric patterns occurring before 40 years (young onset) and between 40 and 61 years (mid-adult onset).

Methods: We used data from the population-based cohort of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey (ECRHS).

Cell lines derived from Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf), which are the most widely used hosts in the baculovirus-insect cell system, are contaminated with Sf-rhabdoviruses (Sf-RVs). In this study, we identified a closely related virus (Sf-CAT-RV) in the caterpillar species used to isolate the original Sf cell line. We then evaluated the Sf-RV and Sf-CAT-RV host ranges, found Sf-CAT-RV could infect Vero cells, and obtained results suggesting both variants can infect mouse ear fibroblasts.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines the link between residential greenspace and lung function decline over 20 years in 5,559 adults across 11 countries, revealing conflicting prior research results.
  • It measured lung function at three different ages and assessed greenspace using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), considering various green space types around residential areas.
  • The findings indicated that increased greenspace, particularly within 500 meters, correlates with a faster decline in lung function, especially in females and individuals in low air pollution areas, challenging the assumption that more greenspace equals better lung health.

One of the primary goals of hip arthroscopy for femoroacetabular impingement (FAI) syndrome is precise removal of pathologic FAI morphology while protecting and restoring the normal soft tissue anatomy. Adequate visualization is a key foundation of precise removal of FAI morphology and varying types of capsulotomies are frequently used to achieve necessary exposure. Anatomic and outcomes studies have influenced an increasing appreciation for repairing these capsulotomies.
