Objective: The impact of poor sleep on tinnitus has been mainly attributed to central processes. There is an association between sleep disorders and hearing loss, but whether hearing levels mediate the association between sleep disorders and tinnitus is unknown. This study investigates the association between sleep characteristics, tinnitus, and hearing loss.

Posterior Palatal Expansion via Subnasal Endoscopy (2PENN) for Maxillary Deficiency: A Pilot Study.

Objective: Surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) addresses transverse maxillary deficiency, a known contributor to nasal obstruction. The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility, preliminary outcomes, and safety of posterior palatal expansion via subnasal endoscopy (2PENN), a modified SARPE procedure, aimed at achieving anterior and posterior maxillary expansion.

Methods: This prospective case series included consecutive adult patients with findings of transverse maxillary deficiency that underwent the 2PENN procedure from 4/2021 to 4/2022.

Enhanced drug-induced sleep endoscopy: Distinguishing central from obstructive apnea.

This case report describes a patient originally diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) who was later found to have central sleep apnea (CSA) during drug-induced sleep endoscopy, which was subsequently confirmed on an in-laboratory sleep study. The revised diagnosis resulted in a change in recommended therapy from hypoglossal nerve stimulation to phrenic nerve stimulation. This case report is a reminder that the sleep surgeon must be cognizant of the possibility of CSA being misclassified as OSA especially as home sleep studies become increasingly routine, and discusses ways to more easily distinguish between CSA and OSA.

Human-papillomavirus (HPV)-positive tonsillar and base of tongue carcinomas (TSCC/BOTSCC) are rising in incidence and treatments with radiotherapy, chemoradiotherapy (RT/CRT), and neck dissections (NDs) have several side effects. Therefore, an improved selection of patients needing salvage NDs would be beneficial. We examined the prevalence and localisations of viable tumour cells in neck lymph nodes in patients post-RT/CRT, identified by fluorodeoxyglucose positron-emission tomography with computer-tomography (FDG PET-CT), with a focus on HPV-associated tumours.

Distribution of PAHs and trace elements in Spartina densiflora and associated sediments from low to highly contaminated South American estuarine saltmarshes.

Estuarine saltmarshes from South America are exposed to several anthropogenic impacts due to diverse human activities that occur in both Atlantic/Pacific coastal environments. Primarily, chemical and petrochemical industries negatively impact saltmarshes generating inputs/deposition of non-essential trace elements (NTEs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediments. The native cordgrass Spartina densiflora inhabits a wide range of environments, from non-impacted to highly impacted areas.

Assessment of trace metals and porphyrins in excreta of Humboldt penguins (Spheniscus humboldti) in different locations of the northern coast of Chile.

To add data on trace metal contamination of Humboldt penguins in the South Pacific, levels of trace metals (As, Hg, Pb, Cu, Zn, and Cd) and porphyrins (copro-, uro-, and proto-) in excreta of Humboldt penguins that inhabit some important nesting sites on the northern coast of Chile were determined. Fresh excreta were collected on Pan de Azúcar Island, Chañaral Island, and Cachagua Island, from December 2011 to January 2012. Concentration of metals was determined by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, whereas porphyrins levels were measured by fluorimetric analysis.

Background: Several studies have reported that concurrent chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (CLT) with papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) is associated with improved prognosis of the PTC, including decreased lymph node metastasis. Detection of patients with functional dyspepsia using wavelet transform applied to their electrogastrogram.

The aim of the present study was to develop a classifier able to discriminate between healthy controls and dyspeptic patients by analysis of their electrogastrograms. Fifty-six electrogastrograms were analyzed, corresponding to 42 dyspeptic patients and 14 healthy controls. The original signals were subsampled, filtered and divided into the pre-, post-, and prandial stages.

Prospective Evaluation of FIBROSpect II for Fibrosis Detection in Hepatitis C and B Patients Undergoing Laparoscopic Biopsy.

Serum markers of liver fibrosis are difficult to validate, due to the sampling error and observer variability associated with percutaneous liver biopsies. Laparoscopic biopsy decreases sampling error and increases the reliability of histopathologic assessment. We prospectively evaluated the FIBROSpect(SM) II serum marker test for viral liver fibrosis against laparoscopic biopsies by studying 145 patients with chronic hepatitis B or C who underwent laparoscopy in a tertiary care setting.
