Risperidone alters food intake, core body temperature, and locomotor activity in mice.

Risperidone induces significant weight gain in female mice; however, the underlying mechanisms related to this effect are unknown. We investigated the effects of risperidone on locomotor activity, core body temperature, and uncoupling protein (UCP) and hypothalamic orexin mRNA expression. Female C57BL/6J mice were acclimated to individual housing and randomly assigned to either risperidone (4 mg/kg BW day) or placebo (PLA).

Induction of type III secretion by cell-free Chlamydia trachomatis elementary bodies.

Chlamydiae secrete type III effector proteins at two distinct stages of their developmental cycle. Elementary bodies (EBs) secrete at least one pre-formed effector protein, Tarp, across the host plasma membrane from an extracellular location. Once internalized, a set of newly transcribed proteins are secreted to modify the inclusion membrane.

What do nuclear power, smoking, and eating beef have in common? The answer is multifaceted. They all share aspects of mass production and consumption, and therefore consumer confidence comes into play in evaluating each of the products' merits. They all produce some level of anxiety--be it in response to adverse media coverage, or the successes of adversarial interest groups in publicizing those products' weaknesses--among consumers who wonder what if any level of the product should be consumed.

Merkel cell carcinoma: important aspects of diagnosis and management.

Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC) is a highly aggressive primary neuroendocrine tumor. It is suggested in the literature that postoperative radiotherapy may decrease local recurrence and improve overall survival. The purpose of this retrospective review was to determine our experience and review the literature on this aggressive malignancy.

Use of Internet-based resources to support an introductory animal and poultry science course.

This article describes the development and implementation of a World Wide Web page to support a team-taught introductory animal and poultry science course. The objectives were to examine the capabilities of this type of instructional resource, determine students' willingness to use this type of resource, create opportunities for interactive learning, and improve students' enthusiasm for the subject area. A variety of course materials were made available through the Internet, including the class syllabus, lecture notes, and practice questions to support and augment class lectures.

Rights of animals, perceptions of science, and political activism: profile of American animal rights activities.

This article reports original research examining characteristics of the active followers of the American animal rights movement. Typical respondents were Caucasian, highly educated urban professional women approximately thirty years old with a median income of $33,000 (1989). Most activists think of themselves as Democrats or as Independents, and have moderate to liberal political views.

Characteristics of the growth inhibition and cytotoxicity of long-chain (sphingoid) bases for Chinese hamster ovary cells: evidence for an involvement of protein kinase C.

Long-chain bases are potent inhibitors of protein kinase C and cellular processes mediated by this enzyme. However, when added to cells they usually cause some degree of growth inhibition and cytotoxicity and it is unclear whether this reflects inhibition of protein kinase C or nonspecific detergent effects of these amphipathic compounds. This study examined the effects of sphinganine on Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells to gain more insight into these possibilities.

Quantitation of free sphingosine in liver by high-performance liquid chromatography.

Conditions were established for the extraction of free sphingosine from liver and the separation and quantitation of this and other long-chain (sphingoid) bases (e.g., sphingosine, sphinganine, phytosphingosine, and homologs) by reverse-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Type A behavior pattern, parental history of hypertension, and cardiovascular reactivity in college males.

Two risk factors for cardiovascular disorders, parental history of hypertension and the Type A behavior pattern, were investigated concurrently with respect to cardiovascular reactivity to challenging situations. Sixty-four college males were given both the Structured Interview (SI) and Jenkins Activity Survey (JAS) for the Type A behavior pattern and a family health questionnaire to determine parental history of hypertension. The students were monitored for blood pressure (BP), heart rate (HR), and pulse transit time (PTT) response to four tasks: cold pressor, isometric handgrip exercise, a reading comprehension task, and backwards digit span.

Family characteristics and school achievements of type A children.

We examined the familial characteristics of Type A children and the consequences of Type A behaviors for children's classroom achievements. A maximum of 156 boys and 190 girls enrolled in elementary and middle schools and their parents participated in various aspects of the data collection procedures and analyses reported in this article. Results showed that Type A children were not more likely to have families with a history of cardiovascular-related diseases or families of upper socioeconomic status.

Observation Is Insufficient for Discovering that the Surface of Still Water Is Invariantly Horizontal.

Among women college students who did not know that the surface of still water in a bottle is always horizontal, two types of specific task procedures designed to elicit self-discovery of the principle were ineffective. Failure to acquire the concept was reflected in inaccurate responses on the adjustment task and by inability of students to verbalize a correct strategy.
