Two possible risk factors for drug addiction were weighed against each other: (1) perinatal factors associated with obstetric medication at time of birth; and (2) factors associated with familial socio-economic conditions at time of birth. The subjects comprised 200 amphetamine addicts and 200 opiate addicts born in Stockholm 1945-1966. In a matched case control study, addicts were compared to their siblings with regard to possible obstetric risk factors by means of conditional logistic regression controlling for socio-economic level and civil status.

Sir Bernard, however, also made it clear that "we have not seen it as part of our remit to carry out a comprehensive needs assessment for the whole of London," but concluded that the extremes of health need found in London were "unparalleled in the rest of England." Dr Jacobson highlights some of the major determinants of health inequality in inner London and assesses the extent to which the proposed solutions are likely to meet these needs.

Territorial males suppress reproductive function in the nonterritorial males, and have larger gonads and larger gonadotropin-releasing hormone- (GnRH) containing neurons in the preoptic area (POA). We describe an experiment designed to establish the causal relationship between large GnRH neurons and large testes in these males by determining the feedback effects of gonadal sex steroids on the GnRH neurons.

We also measured riboflavin and pyridoxine activity in the same groups. We used activated enzyme assays (erythrocyte transketolase, glutathione reductase, aspartate aminotransferase) to assess tissue stores of the dependent vitamin cofactors (thiamine (vitamin B1), riboflavin (vitamin B2), and pyridoxine (vitamin B6), respectively).

Plasma membrane (PM) proteins obtained from apical (AP) and basolateral (BL) PM domains of confluent BAEC monolayers were isolated using the cationic colloidal silica technique and resolved by two-dimensional gel electrophoresis (2-D PAGE). To facilitate the identification of domain-specific PM proteins, an isoelectric point/molecular weight database of the proteins from AP and BL PM domains was constructed.

The procedure relies on the modification of the density of the luminal plasmalemma obtained by coating it by perfusion in situ first, with cationized colloidal silica and then with Na polyacrylate. These steps generate a strongly adhering coat to the luminal plasmalemma that resists tissue homogenization to yield, upon repeated centrifugation through Nycodenz density gradients, a nearly homogeneous fraction of coated luminal plasmalemmal fragments still carrying their associated plasmalemmal vesicles.

It was our goal to determine how these receptors function in HeLa cell-substratum adhesion. We report here that the sequence of events by which the receptors mediate adhesion to collagen or gelatin is: (1) induction of cell attachment by specific collagen receptor-substratum interactions with culture dishes covalently coated with either type I collagen or gelatin - attachment is inhibited by soluble gelatin; (2) stabilization of attachment by exocytotic upregulation of the receptors to the basal plasma membrane, which was demonstrated by analyzing, during cell adhesion, the redistribution of the collagen receptors among the apical plasma membrane exposed to the culture medium, the basal plasma membrane contacting the culture dish, and an intracellular pool of plasma membrane vesicles; (3) the initiation of cell spreading by receptor clustering and cytoskeletal association.

Two salt bridges (between Glu15 and Arg174 and between Asp68 and Arg134) span the cleft opening. To elucidate the role of the inter-domain salt bridges in the ligand-induced domain motion, the acidic residues were changed (singly and together) to their corresponding amide side-chains by site-directed mutagenesis of the recombinant Escherichia coli sulfate-binding protein.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of two doses of caffeine on peak torque and muscle endurance in the knee extensors and flexors. Twenty males and 16 females were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 600 mg caffeine, 300 mg caffeine, or a control receiving a placebo. Subjects with similar caffeine consumption history were used and all subjects abstained from caffeine usage for 24 hours prior to testing.
