Objective: Iodide transport across thyrocytes constitutes a critical step for thyroid hormone biosynthesis, mediated mainly by the basolateral sodium-iodide-symporter (NIS (SLC5A5)) and the apical anion exchanger pendrin (PDS (SLC26A4)). Both transmembrane proteins have been described as autoantigens in thyroid disease, yet the reports on autoantibody (aAb) prevalence and diagnostic usefulness are conflicting. We developed a high-throughput screening assay that allows for relative comparison of the twitch force of millimeter-scale gel-based cardiac tissues. This assay is based on principles taken from traction force microscopy and uses fluorescent microspheres embedded in a soft polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) substrate. Background: Prompt and effective analgesia is a mainstay of emergency department (ED) medicine; however, it is often delayed in times of overcrowding and by the need to establish intravenous (IV) access. Thus, noninvasive analgesic administration by means of the intranasal route could potentially reduce time to analgesic administration by eliminating IV line insertion.
Methods: This retrospective study evaluated time from physician entry into patient's room to opioid administration after implementation of an intranasal fentanyl protocol.
Predicting space use patterns of animals from their interactions with the environment is fundamental for understanding the effect of habitat changes on ecosystem functioning. Recent attempts to address this problem have sought to unify resource selection analysis, where animal space use is derived from available habitat quality, and mechanistic movement models, where detailed movement processes of an animal are used to predict its emergent utilization distribution. Such models bias the animal's movement towards patches that are easily available and resource-rich, and the result is a predicted probability density at a given position being a function of the habitat quality at that position.

That stem cells can be programmed, or somatic cells reprogrammed, in this fashion suggests that stem cell fusion holds promise as a therapeutic approach for the repair of damaged tissues, especially tissues not readily capable of functional regeneration, such as the myocardium. In an attempt to increase the frequency of stem cell fusion and, in so doing, increase the potential for cardiac tissue repair, we expressed the fusogen of the vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV-G) in human MSCs.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFObjective: We examined whether patient subgroups with differing substance use disorders (SUDs) and psychiatric severity levels varied on engagement in continuing care and abstinence outcomes, the association of continuity of care practices to engagement, and the association of engagement to abstinence.
Method: Staff in 28 Veterans Affairs SUD treatment programs used the Addiction Severity Index to assess 865 (98% male) patients' alcohol, other drug, and psychiatric problems at treatment entry. At discharge, staff supplied data on patients' treatment, motivation, and continuity of care practices.
This article reports on the use of high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) for the investigation of as-grown (hydrogen-terminated) and oxidized nanocrystalline diamond films (NCD) using chemical, physical, and electrochemical approaches. The results indicate that the nature and number of oxygen-related chemical groups generated on the NCD surface depend strongly on the oxidation process. A high concentration of C-O functions has been obtained on the NCD surface oxidized by rf (radio frequency) oxygen plasma, whereas the highest C═O/C-O ratio has been achieved by electrochemical oxidation.

Methods: Residents over age 55 admitted to VANHs (n = 27,002) were identified in VA administrative files, and SUD and non-SUD residents were compared.
Results: Compared with other residents, the residents with SUDs (18% of admissions over age 55) were more likely to be younger, male, African-American, unmarried, have low income and a tobacco use disorder.
Objective: This study identified recent changes in the prevalence of psychiatric disorders among Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) nursing home residents.
Methods: Psychiatric diagnoses in administrative databases were summarized for nursing home residents in 1998, 2002, and 2006. Census prevalence rates were compared with findings from earlier VA nursing home surveys.
Indium-tin-oxynitride (ITON) films have been fabricated by rf sputtering from an indium-tin-oxide target in nitrogen plasma. The influence of postdeposition annealing up to 800 degrees C is analyzed by electrical, optical, and surface characterization of the films in comparison to indium-tin-oxide (ITO) films fabricated in argon plasma. High-temperature annealing resulted in ITO(N) films with similar carrier concentrations.

Method: Staff in 18 Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) outpatient SUD programs used the Addiction Severity Index to assess 429 nonabstinent patients' alcohol and drug problems at treatment entry.
The spatial impulse response of antenna-coupled infrared detectors with dimensions comparable with the wavelength is obtained from a two-dimensional scan of a tightly focused CO(2)-laser beam. The method uses an experimental setup with submicrometer resolution and an iterative deconvolution algorithm. The measured spatial response is compared with numerically computed near-field distributions of a dipole antenna, with good agreement.
