Rationale: Vein calcite in Devils Hole has been precipitating continuously in oxygen-isotope equilibrium at a constant temperature for over 500 000 years, providing an unmatched δO paleoclimate time series. A substantial issue is that coeval calcite (based on matching δO values) has uranium-series ages differing by 12 000 years.

Methods: An unparalleled high-accuracy δO chronology series from continuously submerged calcite was used to correct the published uranium-series ages of non-continuously formed calcite in two cores, cyclically exposed by water-table decline during glacial-interglacial transitions.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to evaluate whether releasing the first dorsal compartment during surgery for distal radius fractures improves symptoms in patients with pre-existing de Quervain disease.
  • A randomized cohort study was conducted with patients either undergoing compartment release or not, with results showing significant symptom improvement and better pinch strength in the release group at 3 and 6 months post-surgery.
  • The findings suggest that routinely performing this release during fracture treatment can help alleviate symptoms of de Quervain disease more effectively.

There are scarce data regarding the rate of the occurrence of primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) and visible lamina cribrosa pores (LCPs) in the eyes of individuals with African ancestry; the potential impact of these features on disease burden remains unknown. We recruited subjects with POAG to the Primary Open-Angle African American Glaucoma Genetics (POAAGG) study. Through regression models, we evaluated the association between the presence of LCPs and various phenotypic features.

Background: Globally, children are legally obliged to attend school at a certain age (ranging from 4 to 7 years old). Developmental differences are rarely considered at school entry nor are they always reflected in the teaching and learning environment. Children who start school without being ready to cope may be significantly disadvantaged.

Presented here is the first demonstration of supervised discretization to 'declutter' multivariate classification data in chemical sensor applications. The performance of multivariate classification models is often limited by the non-informative chemical variance within each target class; decluttering methods seek to reduce within-class variance while retaining between-class variance. Supervised discretization is shown to declutter classes in a manner that is superior to the state-of-the-art External Parameter Orthogonalization (EPO) by constructing a more parsimonious model with fewer parameters to optimize and is, consequently, less susceptible to overfitting and information loss.

Background: The psychological therapies service (PTS) in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust, in Northern Ireland, provides therapies to adults with moderate or severe mental health difficulties. Psychometric outcomes data are routinely collected to assess if a patient demonstrates significant improvement in their main presenting problem area following therapy. The wider impact of therapy is not fully measured in the outcomes database as this would be disproportionately burdensome for both patient and therapist.

Coercive control and related research have progressed significantly in the past number of years, with an ever-growing evidence base adding to its construct. However, currently there is a lack of evidence on young people's knowledge and understanding of coercive control. We included a module of questions in the 2020 Northern Ireland Young Life and Life and Times survey ( = 2,069) with the aim of capturing baseline measurable data on understanding of coercive control within intimate relationships among 16-year olds.

Objectives: The aim of the study is to determine whether a positive OncoE6 Anal Test result has statistically significant higher odds of being associated with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) and to calculate sensitivity and specificity of this test for predicting HSIL in adult men who have sex with men and are living with HIV (MSMLWH).

Materials And Methods: Men living with HIV 18 years or older having ≥atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance-grade anal cytology results were eligible to enroll in this cross-sectional study. Anal samples were collected just before the high-resolution anoscopy procedure.

Purpose: To characterize on-treatment changes in GTV morphology in children with parameningeal rhabdomyosarcoma receiving upfront proton therapy with concurrent chemotherapy and thereby provide guidance on the timing of on-treatment imaging and adaptive replanning.

Methods And Materials: GTV was delineated on 86 simulation and weekly MR images of 15 prospectively enrolled patients (aged 1-21 years). Temporal changes from baseline in volume and surface (95% Hausdorff distance) were analyzed in relation to the need for plan verification and the resultant doses with hypothetical no treatment adaptation.

Healthcare staff represent a high-risk group for mental health difficulties as a result of their role during the COVID-19 pandemic. A number of wellbeing initiatives have been implemented to support this population, but remain largely untested in terms of their impact on both the recipients and providers of supports. To examine the experience of staff support providers in delivering psychological initiatives to healthcare staff, as well as obtain feedback on their perceptions of the effectiveness of different forms of support.

Antibiotic resistance is a growing concern that has prompted a renewed focus on drug discovery, stewardship, and evolutionary studies of the patterns and processes that underlie this phenomenon. A resistant strain's competitive fitness relative to its sensitive counterparts in the absence of drug can impact its spread and persistence in both clinical and community settings. In a prior study, we examined the fitness of tetracycline-resistant clones that evolved from five different genotypes, which had diverged during a long-term evolution experiment.

Routine cervical cancer screening is important for women living with HIV (WLH) due to the greater incidence and persistence of high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) infection. HR-HPV self-sampling has been proposed to overcome barriers to in-office cervical cancer screening in underserved populations. However, little is known about baseline knowledge of HR-HPV and the acceptability of HR-HPV self-sampling among WLH.

Meteorites, Fe and Si-rich microspherules, positive Ir and Pt anomalies, and burned charcoal-rich Hopewell habitation surfaces demonstrate that a cosmic airburst event occurred over the Ohio River valley during the late Holocene. A comet-shaped earthwork was constructed near the airburst epicenter. Twenty-nine radiocarbon ages establish that the event occurred between 252 and 383 CE, a time when 69 near-Earth comets were documented.

Self-objectification, the internalization of an observer's appearance-based perspective of one's body, has been theorized and demonstrated to reduce body awareness among women. In this field study, we propose self-objectification as the mechanism to explain the oft-observed phenomenon where women wearing little clothing appear unbothered by cold weather, positing that self-objectification obstructs women's feelings of cold. We surveyed women outside nightclubs on cold nights, assessed self-objectification, and asked participants to report how cold they felt.

Molecular epidemiology (ME) is one tool used to end the HIV epidemic in the United States. We combined clinical and behavioral data with HIV sequence data to identify any overlap in clusters generated from different sequence datasets; to characterize HIV transmission clusters; and to identify correlates of clustering among people living with HIV (PLWH) in Washington, District of Columbia (DC). First, Sanger sequences from DC Cohort participants, a longitudinal HIV study, were combined with next-generation sequences (NGS) from participants in a ME substudy to identify clusters.
