Background: Energy expenditure (EE) in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) may differ from other intracranial pathologies, such as intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) or traumatic brain injury (TBI), due to an activation of the sympathetic nervous system. Indirect calorimetry (IC) is recommended, but is not always available. We study EE, catabolism, and metabolic stress in patients with SAH, TBI, ICH, and sepsis as controls.

Article Synopsis
  • Infection and sepsis significantly contribute to acute-on-chronic liver failure (ACLF), with voriconazole (VRC) being a recommended treatment; however, its effectiveness may be impacted by the altered pharmacokinetics (PK) in ACLF patients undergoing continuous renal replacement therapy (RRT).
  • A study of 15 patients (6 with ACLF) analyzed VRC PK using high-performance liquid chromatography and a dialysis pharmacometric model, finding no significant differences in clearance or volume distribution between ACLF and non-liver failure patients.
  • Monte-Carlo simulations indicated that the recommended VRC dose often resulted in suboptimal drug levels, suggesting that maintenance doses should be adjusted and therapeutic drug monitoring is critical

Background And Objectives: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is an autoimmune disease primarily affecting the peripheral nervous system. However, several noncontrolled studies have suggested concomitant inflammatory CNS demyelination similar to multiple sclerosis. The aim of this study was to investigate an involvement of the visual pathway in patients with CIDP.
