Article Synopsis
  • - A systematic review analyzed the impact of probiotics on bone health in rodent models, indicating potential benefits for bone mineral density and structure when compared to no supplementation.
  • - In intact rodents, probiotics significantly increased volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and bone volume fraction (BV/TV) at the femur, although they didn't change the cortical bone structure.
  • - In ovariectomized models, probiotic supplementation led to notable improvements in vBMD, BV/TV, and cortical thickness across various bones, suggesting that probiotics could be a promising approach for enhancing bone health.

Background: Many clinical practice guidelines recommend dietary pulses for the prevention and management of cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The impact of extracted pulse proteins remains unclear. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials of the effect of extracted pulse proteins on therapeutic lipid targets.

Osteoporosis has traditionally been characterized by underlying endocrine mechanisms, though evidence indicates a role of inflammation in its pathophysiology. Lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of gram-negative bacteria that reside in the intestines, can be released into circulation and stimulate the immune system, upregulating bone resorption. Exogenous LPS is used in rodent models to study the effect of systemic inflammation on bone, and to date a variety of different doses, routes, and durations of LPS administration have been used.

Article Synopsis
  • Research explores the link between fructose-containing sugars in sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs) and inflammatory markers, focusing on food source and energy control.
  • A systematic review analyzed 64 controlled trials, looking at how different fructose sources (like sweetened dairy and fruit juice) affect inflammation over varying energy levels.
  • Findings indicate that total fructose-containing sugars reduced C-reactive protein (CRP) in addition trials, while other trial types showed no significant effects on inflammation, suggesting the food source plays a critical role.

Monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are one of the most successful and versatile protein-based pharmaceutical products used to treat multiple pathological conditions. The remarkable specificity of mAbs and their affinity for biological targets has led to the implementation of mAbs in the therapeutic regime of oncogenic, chronic inflammatory, cardiovascular, and infectious diseases. Thus, the discovery of novel mAbs with defined functional activities is of crucial importance to expand our ability to address current and future clinical challenges.

The introduction of solid foods is an important dietary event during infancy that causes profound shifts in the gut microbial composition towards a more adult-like state. Infant gut bacterial dynamics, especially in relation to nutritional intake remain understudied. Over 2 weeks surrounding the time of solid food introduction, the day-to-day dynamics in the gut microbiomes of 24 healthy, full-term infants from the Baby, Food & Mi and LucKi-Gut cohort studies were investigated in relation to their dietary intake.

Background: Midterm effects of bariatric surgery on patients with obesity and hypertension remain uncertain.

Objective: To determine the 3-year effects of Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) on blood pressure (BP) compared with medical therapy (MT) alone.

Design: Randomized clinical trial.

Background Treatment of advanced epithelial ovarian cancer results in a relapse rate of 75%. Early markers of response would enable optimization of management and improved outcome in both primary and recurrent disease. Purpose To assess the apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), derived from diffusion-weighted MRI, as an indicator of response, progression-free survival (PFS), and overall survival.

Growth hormone (GH) is secreted during hypoglycemia, and GH-responsive neurons are found in brain areas containing glucose-sensing neurons that regulate the counter-regulatory response (CRR). However, whether GH modulates the CRR to hypoglycemia specific neuronal populations is currently unknown. Mice carrying ablation of GH receptor (GHR) either in leptin receptor (LepR)- or steroidogenic factor-1 (SF1)-expressing cells were studied.

Weight loss triggers important metabolic responses to conserve energy, especially via the fall in leptin levels. Consequently, weight loss becomes increasingly difficult with weight regain commonly occurring in most dieters. Here we show that central growth hormone (GH) signaling also promotes neuroendocrine adaptations during food deprivation.

Bariatric surgery is an effective strategy for blood pressure (BP) reduction, but most of the evidence relies on office BP measurements. In this study, we evaluated the impact of bariatric surgery on 24-hour BP profile, BP variability, and resistant hypertension prevalence. This is a randomized trial including obese patients with grade 1 and 2 using at least 2 antihypertensive drugs at maximal doses or >2 at moderate doses.

Background: Recent research efforts on bariatric surgery have focused on metabolic and diabetes mellitus resolution. Randomized trials designed to assess the impact of bariatric surgery in patients with obesity and hypertension are needed.

Methods: In this randomized, single-center, nonblinded trial, we included patients with hypertension (using ≥2 medications at maximum doses or >2 at moderate doses) and a body mass index between 30.

Purpose To assess the repeatability of apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) estimates in extracranial soft-tissue diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging across a wide range of imaging protocols and patient populations. Materials and Methods Nine prospective patient studies and one prospective volunteer study, performed between 2006 and 2016 with research ethics committee approval and written informed consent from each subject, were included in this single-institution study. A total of 141 tumors and healthy organs were imaged twice (interval between repeated examinations, 45 minutes to 10 days, depending the on study) to assess the repeatability of median and mean ADC estimates.

Background: Acute human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection is a major contributor to transmission of HIV-1. An understanding of acute HIV-1 infection may be important in the development of treatment strategies to eradicate HIV-1 or achieve a functional cure.

Methods: We performed twice-weekly qualitative plasma HIV-1 RNA nucleic acid testing in 2276 volunteers who were at high risk for HIV-1 infection.

Unlabelled: Endothelin-1 (ET-1) plays a major role in the pathophysiology of hypertension and its associated cardiovascular risk. We tested the hypothesis that chronic nebivolol treatment reduces ET-1-mediated vasoconstrictor tone in adult humans with elevated blood pressure (BP). Furthermore, reducing ET-1 vasoconstrictor activity contributes to the improvement in endothelial vasodilator function associated with nebivolol treatment.

Background Peripartum cardiomyopathy shares some clinical features with idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy, a disorder caused by mutations in more than 40 genes, including TTN, which encodes the sarcomere protein titin. Methods In 172 women with peripartum cardiomyopathy, we sequenced 43 genes with variants that have been associated with dilated cardiomyopathy. We compared the prevalence of different variant types (nonsense, frameshift, and splicing) in these women with the prevalence of such variants in persons with dilated cardiomyopathy and with population controls.

Context: Weight loss is associated with reduction in bone mineral density (BMD).

Objective: The objective was to address the role of changes in fat mass (FM) and lean mass (LM) in BMD decline in both sexes.

Design: A 2-year randomized controlled trial, the Preventing Overweight Using Novel Dietary Strategies (POUNDS-LOST).

Hyperuricemia is linked to gout and features of metabolic syndrome. There is concern that dietary fructose may increase uric acid concentrations. To assess the effects of fructose on serum uric acid concentrations in people with and without diabetes, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of controlled feeding trials.
