Objective: The objective of this prospective, naturalistic study, conducted in first-episode psychosis patients from a Central-European population, was to assess the utility of Cytochrome P-450 2D6 (CYP2D6) genotype testing under normal clinical setting.

Methods: A total of 35 patients diagnosed for the first time with schizophrenia or acute schizophrenia-like psychotic disorder and treated with risperidone were enrolled in the study. These patients underwent sequentiation of the CYP2D6 gene and evaluations of symptoms and severity of adverse effects using the PANSS and UKU scales, respectively.

High-resolution melting curve analysis (HRM) of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplicons has been described as a fast, cheap, and reliable closed-tube method of genotyping with no need for labeled primers or labeled probes. We adapted this melting analysis assay for the detection of the most common nonfunctional alleles of cytochrome P-450 (CYP) 2D6 in the Caucasian population that affect the metabolism of many commonly used drugs. We used this method to genotype 91 patients under paroxetine therapy.

The measurement of gas produced as a fermentation end product in vitro was correlated with absorbance as a measure of bacterial growth and was used as a rapid screening procedure to test the antimicrobial activity of certain essential oil and tannin secondary plant metabolites on gastrointestinal microorganisms from chickens. The assay was optimised using Clostridium perfringens and Lactobacillus fermentum, and tested in antimicrobial assays against C. perfringens; the minimum inhibitory concentration for each essential oil and condensed tannin was determined.
