Objective: Police officers are often the first responders when individuals experience a mental health crisis and typically remain responsible for transport to a psychiatric emergency department. In 2014, a psychiatric ambulance (PA) was introduced in the city of Amsterdam to take over the transport of individuals in a mental health crisis. The purpose of the PA was to use fewer restrictive measures while guaranteeing safety for both patients and personnel.

Background: A strong increase in mental health emergency consultations and admissions in youths has been reported in recent years. Although empirical evidence is lacking, gender differences in risk of admission may have contributed to this increase. A clearer understanding of the relationship, if any, between gender and various aspects of (in)voluntary care would help in more evidence-based service planning.

Background: At the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, there were fears that a higher proportion of patients with a psychiatric disorder would find themselves in crisis due to the threat of COVID-19 and the impact of the restrictions. If the emergency mental health department would become blocked this could work through to emergency rooms (ER). Acute psychiatry is also assessed at the ER due to lack of space in the emergency mental health department, this is called ‘overflow’.

Background: There are regional differences in the Netherlands in the numbers of emergency compulsory admissions (Inbewaringstelling: IBS). We looked at three 24/7 facilities to investigate the relationships between patient and consultation characteristics on the one hand, and numbers of emergency compulsory admissions on the other, against the background of the level of urbanisation.

Method: We compared emergency consultations in 18-64 year olds in Apeldoorn, Amsterdam and Rotterdam between 2012 and 2016 in terms of socio-demographic, procedural and clinical characteristics, and in terms of outcome.
