Trends in the survival of very preterm infants between 2011 and 2020 in France.

Objective: The objective is to evaluate changes in survival to discharge of liveborn infants less than 32 weeks' gestational age (GA) in France, where the latest available data on very preterm survival at a national-level are from the EPIPAGE-2 cohort in 2011.

Design: Population-based cohort study.

Setting: Metropolitan France in 2011, 2015 and 2020.

Xylazine-Associated Necrotic Upper-Extremity Wounds: A Single Hospital System's Experience with 82 Patients and 125 Wounds.

Background: The rise in xylazine-adulterated heroin and fentanyl poses novel challenges to hand surgeons and a rising epidemic of necrotic upper-extremity wounds. While prior case studies have focused on particularly severe and complex xylazine-associated necrotic (XAN) wounds, the aim of this consecutive case series was to characterize the variability of presentations (ranging from mild to severe) at a single institution at the epicenter of the xylazine epidemic.

Methods: Patients presenting to a tertiary referral center for XAN upper-extremity wounds were retrospectively identified from emergency department visits and hospital admissions between January 2021 and December 2023.

Obesity and postpartum hospital use among individuals without additional medical comorbidities.

Objective: The objective of this study was to examine whether obesity without preexisting or gestational comorbidities is associated with postpartum hospital use (PHU).

Methods: We studied 2016 to 2018 birth certificate and discharge data on 178,729 New York City births without International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) codes at delivery for diabetes; hypertension; placental disease; anemia; thyrotoxicosis; bariatric surgery; and pulmonary, cardiac, renal, bleeding, autoimmune, digestive, neuromuscular, mental, or substance-use disorders. We defined PHU as ≥1 readmission or emergency department visit within 30 days of delivery discharge.

Associations of language barriers with very preterm children's behavioural and socio-emotional problems across Europe.

Background: Very preterm birth (<32 weeks gestation, VP), immigrant background, and language barriers are all independently associated with a high risk for mental health problems in childhood, but research has neglected the long-term development of immigrant children born VP. We assessed whether behavioural and socio-emotional problems of 5-year-old children born VP growing up across different language contexts in the European Union are associated with an immigrant background and linguistic distance of families' mother tongue (L1) to the host countries' official languages.

Methods: Data are from a population-based cohort including all VP births in 2011/12 in 11 European countries; a total of 3,067 children were followed up at 2 and 5 years of age.
