The use of nanomaterials for the controlled release of drugs aims to enhance their effectiveness, especially when poorly soluble in water, and achieve their rapid, localized, and effective administration. The present study focuses on the use of a Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 (ZIF-8) as vehicle for the transport and controlled release of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin (CIP) as model due to its favorable physicochemical characteristics. The objective is to synthesize the ZIF-8 material loaded with CIP through encapsulation for subsequent release of the drug in neutral and acid physiological media.

Article Synopsis
  • The Hypotension Prediction Index (HPI) is a machine learning algorithm designed to predict intraoperative arterial hypotension (low blood pressure) during surgery.
  • A study with 104 patients undergoing high-risk non-cardiac surgery examined the impact of HPI alongside a personalized treatment protocol to manage low blood pressure.
  • Results showed that patients monitored with HPI experienced less severe low blood pressure, fewer postoperative complications, and shorter hospital stays compared to those without HPI support.

Rates of childhood sexual abuse are unacceptably high, with potentially long-lasting consequences for those who have been victimized. Currently, there are a number of sexual violence prevention programs that have been developed to lower rates of victimization, increase awareness, and connect victims with resources. Within this area of research, there has been less focus on effective methods of program dissemination.

Objective: An increased number of errors and reduced patient safety have been reported during the incorporation of residents, as this period involves learning new skills. The objectives were to evaluate the learning outcomes of an immersive simulation boot-camp for incoming residents before starting the clinical rotations. Airway assessment, airway control with direct laryngoscopy, and epidural catheterization competencies were evaluated.
