Cardiovascular diseases, both inherited and familial, indicate a risk of early and preventable cardiovascular events for relatives of affected individuals. A digital risk-prediction tool that enables general population individuals to evaluate their cardiovascular risk based on family health history could be a responsible approach to facilitate early detection and improve public health, but development and use of such a tool is not without legal and ethical requirements. At the start of tool development, experts addressed potential legal and ethical implications.

Mortality and Causes of Death From Sickle Cell Disease in The Netherlands, 1985-2017.

In the Netherlands, between 1985 and 2007 secular changes in the health care of patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) have taken place, such as penicillin prophylaxis, vaccination programs and stroke prevention. We investigated the number and causes of death in a cohort of 298 SCD patients, established in 2007, before introduction of neonatal screening, to determine preventable deaths. This paper discusses the assembly challenges considering the design and manufacturability of a Wafer Level Thin Film Package in MEMS applications. The assembly processes are discussed. The loads associated with these processes are illustrated and evaluated.

Mechanisms of resistance to piperacillin of Enterobacter cloacae strains differ by antibiotic prescription policy.

During a study of piperacillin resistance among aerobic Gram-negative bacteria, 18 resistant strains of Enterobacter cloacae were obtained from a General Hospital in Rotterdam and 13 from a University Hospital in Amsterdam. The patterns of antibiotic susceptibilities were different: the Amsterdam strains were generally resistant to penicillins, the third generation cephalosporins and temocillin, whereas the Rotterdam strains were more often sensitive to the third generation cephalosporins and temocillin but more resistant to penicillins. Isoelectric focusing and substrate profiles showed the presence of chromosomal Class 1 beta-lactamase in ten of the Amsterdam strains: in three strains a plasmid mediated TEM-1 enzyme was detected.

Subcellular localization and topology of the K88 usher FaeD in Escherichia coli.

The subcellular localization of the K88 usher FaeD was studied in Escherichia coli whole cells by using isopycnic sucrose density gradient centrifugation of isolated membranes, the detergents Triton X-100 and sodium lauryl sarcosinate and immunoblotting with a specific FaeD antiserum. Cells containing the complete K88 operon, as well as cells containing the subcloned faeD gene in various expression vectors, were used. Most of the FaeD was present in the outer membranes in a detergent-resistant form.
