Biliary lithiasis is a widespread disease all over the world; one-third of the white population presents with stones in the biliary ducts. In Chile, it is present in 47% of adult females. The most common complications of this pathology are acute cholecystitis, choledocholithiasis, acute pancreatitis, retained common bile duct (CBD) stones, and gallbladder cancer; these constitute a serious health problem in Chile.

The technical considerations and preliminary results of 119 patients submitted to laparoscopic highly selective vagotomy are presented. There were 33 with duodenal ulcers, 31 with duodenal ulcers plus gastroesophageal reflux, and 55 with gastroesophageal reflux. Operating time varied from 120 to 160 minutes.

We present our experience at the University of Chile Hospital with 1203 cases of laparoscopic cholecistectomy between April 1991 and July 1993. In only 36 patients ultraselective cholangiography was performed. In 88 cases an endoscopic cholangiography was performed prior to surgery because of suspicion of choledocolithiasis.
