Individualized Surgeon Reports in a Statewide Registry: A Pathway to Improved Outcomes.

Despite progress with the development of joint replacement registries in the United States, surgeons may have limited opportunities to determine the cumulative outcome of their own patients or understand how those outcomes compare with their peers; this information is important for quality improvement. In order to provide surgeons with accurate data, it is first necessary to have a registry with complete coverage and patient matching. Some international registries have accomplished this.

Superior rim fracture of a vitamin E-infused highly cross-linked polyethylene (HXLPE) liner leading to total hip arthroplasty revision.

This case report looks at the failure of a vitamin E-infused highly cross-linked polyethylene acetabular liner that fractured at the superior rim of the locking mechanism. This calls to question whether there is a problem with the vitamin E-infused product or a flaw in the design of the liner or possibly a combination of the 2. Although there has been discussion of a possible minimum rim polyethylene thickness, there has not been a minimum thickness established.

Long-term Wear Data From a Prospective Multicenter Study of Second-Generation Highly Cross-linked Polyethylene Inserts in Total Hip Arthroplasty.

In a prospective multicenter trial on highly cross-linked polyethylene inserts in patients undergoing total hip arthroplasty, 118 patients consented to 10-year follow-up. Medium-term follow-up results showed low wear at 5 and 7 years after surgery. The current study focuses on long-term data at 10 years.

Polyethylene Liner Dissociation Is a Complication of the DePuy Pinnacle Cup: A Report of 23 Cases.

Background: Polyethylene liner dissociation is a rare but catastrophic event in total hip arthroplasty (THA), and certain implant designs are known to be at greater risk. Although the DePuy Pinnacle (Warsaw, IN, USA) modular acetabular construct has an excellent record of fixation and wear, an unexpectedly high number of liner dissociations has been noted.

Questions/purposes: The purposes of this study were (1) to characterize the clinical parameters observed in a large group of patients who have experienced liner dissociations with the DePuy Pinnacle acetabular component; (2) to describe the radiographic findings in this group of patients; and (3) to calculate a minimum frequency of this complication.
