Unlabelled: Dietary flexibility allows animals to respond adaptively to food pulses in the environment. Here we document the novel emergence of widespread hunting of California voles and carnivorous feeding behavior by California ground squirrels. Over two months in the twelfth year of a long-term study on the squirrel population, we document 74 events of juvenile and adult ground squirrels of both sexes depredating, consuming, and/or competing over vole prey.

The ability to store and release energy efficiently is crucial for advancing sustainable energy technologies, and light-driven molecular isomerization presents a promising solution. However, a persistent challenge in this field is achieving both high stability of the energy-storing photoisomer and establishing efficient catalysis for back-isomerization, a critical process for releasing the stored energy as heat. In this work, we introduce a conceptually new molecular system designed for long-term energy storage, which is based on the reversible isomerization of -methylacetophenone ⇄ benzocyclobutenol.

While crop and grassland usage continues to increase, the full diversity of plant-specific volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from these ecosystems, including their implications for atmospheric chemistry and carbon cycling, remains poorly understood. It is particularly important to investigate VOCs in the context of potential biofuels: aside from the implications of large-scale land use, harvest may shift both the flux and speciation of emitted VOCs. To this point, we evaluate the diversity of VOCs emitted both pre and postharvest from "Alkar" tall wheatgrass (), a candidate biofuel that exhibits greater tolerance to frost and saline land compared to other grass varieties.
