Winner-loser plant trait replacements in human-modified tropical forests.

Anthropogenic landscape modification may lead to the proliferation of a few species and the loss of many. Here we investigate mechanisms and functional consequences of this winner-loser replacement in six human-modified Amazonian and Atlantic Forest regions in Brazil using a causal inference framework. Combining floristic and functional trait data for 1,207 tree species across 271 forest plots, we find that forest loss consistently caused an increased dominance of low-density woods and small seeds dispersed by endozoochory (winner traits) and the loss of distinctive traits, such as extremely dense woods and large seeds dispersed by synzoochory (loser traits).

Complications Beyond Borders: A Case Study on a Retained Surgical Towel Leading to an Intra-abdominal Abscess Post-hysterectomy.

This report discusses a significant complication following a hysterectomy performed in Mexico on a 46-year-old woman who developed an intra-abdominal abscess due to a retained surgical towel - a severe but rare surgical error. Initially, her post-surgical symptoms, such as abdominal pain, fever, and malaise, were dismissed by her surgeon in Mexico as typical recovery effects. However, as her condition worsened, she sought emergency care in Arizona.

Excellent 2-Year Outcomes of a Midlevel Constrained Liner Used in Stemless Primary TKA.

Introduction: Instability after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) remains a leading cause of revision TKA and can lead to patient dissatisfaction. While many companies have developed midlevel constrained (MLC) polyethylene inserts in primary TKAs, there is little data on their outcomes.

Purpose: We sought to analyze short-term outcomes including survivorship, rates of manipulation under anesthesia (MUA), and improvements in patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) preoperatively to postoperatively in one design of MLC TKA.

When Time Is the Enemy: An Initial Test of the Process Model of Patience.

The process model of patience attempts to reconcile disparate approaches to understanding patience. This investigation provides an initial test of the tenets of this new theoretical model, which positions impatience as a discrete emotion and patience as a targeted form of emotion regulation. In three studies with diverse samples ( = 1,401; data collected 2022-2023), participants responded to hypothetical scenarios designed to tap into familiar experiences of impatience.
