Immune status of health care workers to measles virus: evaluation of protective titers in four measles IgG EIAs.

Background: Following the recognition of a measles case in a hospital in The Netherlands, health care workers (HCW) from the premises were screened by a commercial enzyme immunoassay (EIA) for measles IgG to identify persons at risk for measles. At least 10% of the HCW were tested measles IgG-negative. As this was considered an unusually high proportion, we hypothesized suboptimal sensitivity of EIAs, especially in medical personnel that had vaccine-induced immunity rather than antibodies resulting from natural infection.

Differentiation and genomic and antigenic variation among fetal, respiratory, and neurological isolates from EHV1 and EHV4 infections in The Netherlands.

Ten monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) were produced against equine herpes virus type 1 (EHV1). Two appeared type-specific, while the other eight were directed against epitopes common to both EHV1 and EHV4. Two MAbs directed against the glycoprotein gp2 recognized linear epitopes, as demonstrated by Western blotting.

Detection of varicella-zoster virus and herpes simplex virus by the polymerase chain reaction with degenerate primers.

Varicella-zoster virus (VZV) and herpes simplex virus (HSV) are human pathogens of significance involved in multiple diseases with either typical or atypical clinical features. In neonates and immunocompromised patients these alphaherpesviruses may cause life-threatening diseases such as encephalitis. Detection of VZV by virus culture is difficult.

Interaction between fatty acid salts and elastin: kinetics, absorption equilibrium, and consequences for elasticity.

Elastin from bovine ligamentum nuchae is incubated in aqueous solutions of sodium salts of fatty acids (FAS). The FAS are laurate, myristate, and palmitate. Absorption of FAS in the elastin network is studied as a function of time, FAS concentration, and ionic strength.
