Two-component regulatory systems (TCS) are among the most widespread mechanisms that bacteria use to sense and respond to environmental changes. In the human pathogen Streptococcus pneumoniae, a total of 13 TCS have been identified and many of them have been linked to pathogenicity. Notably, TCS01 strongly contributes to pneumococcal virulence in several infection models.

Two-temperature rotational energy distributions from rarefied diatomic molecules are very often observed in laboratory plasmas. There has been much debate over the years about the physical meaning of this kind of rotational energy distributions and the associated statistical physics. We show here that under certain reasonable assumptions and constraints the condition of Shannon-Jaynes entropy maximization may produce a two-temperature distribution.

A high fat Western-style diet leads to hepatic steatosis that can progress to steatohepatitis and ultimately cirrhosis or liver cancer. The mechanism that leads to the development of steatosis upon nutritional overload is complex and only partially understood. Using click chemistry-based metabolic tracing and microscopy, we study the interaction between Kupffer cells and hepatocytes ex vivo.

A novel method for fast and robust calculation of Boltzmann plots from molecular spectra is presented. Its use is demonstrated on the OH(A-X) spectrum near 310 nm. A limitation of the method is identified: for overlapping spectra of the OH(A-X) and N(C-B, Δv = 1) band sequence, the calculation may often fail due to insufficient number of measured points.

Background: Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR), an important regulator of immune responses, is activated by UVB irradiation in the skin. Langerhans cells (LC) in the epidermis of patients with atopic dermatitis (AD) carry the high-affinity receptor for IgE, FcεRI, and are crucially involved in the pathogenesis of AD by inducing inflammatory responses and regulating tolerogenic processes.

Objectives: We investigated AhR and AhR repressor (AhRR) expression and functional consequences of AhR activation in human ex vivo skin cells and in in vitro-generated LC.
