In critical care it is crucial to appropriately assess the risk of mortality for each patient. This is especially relevant in pediatrics, with its need for accurate and repeatable scoring. Aim of this study was to evaluate an age-adapted version of the expanded Simplified Acute Physiology Score II; (p-SAPS II), a repeatable, newly-designed scoring system compared to established scores (Pediatric Sequential Organ Failure Assessment Score/pSOFA, Pediatric Logistic Organ Dysfunction Score-2/PELOD-2 and Pediatric Index of Mortality 3/PIM3).

ESIPT and solvent-assisted ESPT in isomeric phenyl naphthols and naphthyl phenols 5-8 were investigated by preparative photolyses in CH3CN-D2O, fluorescence spectroscopy, LFP, and ab initio calculations. ESIPT takes place only in 5 (D-exchange Φ = 0.3), whereas 6-8 undergo solvent-assisted PT with much lower efficiencies.

Five new (2-adamantyl)naphthol derivatives (5-9, quinone methide precursors, QMP) were synthesized and their photochemical reactivity was investigated by preparative photolyses, fluorescence spectroscopy, and laser flash photolysis (LFP). Excitation of QMP 5 to S(1) leads to efficient excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) coupled with dehydration, giving quinone methide QM5 which was characterized by LFP (in CH(3)CN-H(2)O, λ(max) = 370 nm, τ = 0.19 ms).

The syntheses of novel adamantane thialactones 5-12 are reported, and the results of the heavy- and transition-metal cation extraction experiments are described. The results are compared with those obtained with similar thiamacrocyclic ligands that have flexible chains of methylene groups incorporated into the macrocyclic framework as in 13-20. The results show that most of the hosts studied are very good in complexing the Ag(+) ion.

HPLC stability-indicating method has been developed for the simultaneous determination of some water-soluble vitamins (ascorbic acid, thiamine hydrochloride, riboflavin-5'-phosphate sodium, pyridoxine hydrochloride, nicotinamide, D(+)-panthenol) and two preservatives (methylparaben and sodium benzoate) in multivitamin syrup preparation. Water-soluble vitamins, preservatives and their degradants were separated on Zorbax SB-Aq (C(18)) (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 5 microm) column at an ambient temperature.
