We present a case of primary endometriosis of the umbilicus in a young nulliparous patient without any previous history of abdominal or pelvic surgery. Primary endometriosis of extra pelvic sites is unusual while umbilical endometriosis is quite rare. Diagnosis of endometriosis is difficult to obtain and sometimes diagnoses can be false-positive or false-negative.

Background: Extensive experimental studies and a few clinical series have shown that ischemic preconditioning (IPC) attenuates oxidative ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injuries in liver resections performed under inflow vascular control. Selective hepatic vascular exclusion (SHVE) employed during hepatectomies completely deprives the liver of blood flow, as it entails simultaneous clamping of the portal triad and the main hepatic veins. The aim of the present study was to identify whether IPC can also protect hepatocytes during liver resections performed under SHVE.

Introduction: The levels of circulating proinflammatory cytokines may express the extent of the inflammatory response and their participation in plaque progression and rupture needs to be evaluated. We aimed to investigate differences in circulating levels of proinflammatory cytokines and in plaque infiltration by macrophages between patients undergoing carotid endarterectomy for symptomatic and asymptomatic carotid atherosclerotic disease.

Methods: One hundred nineteen patients (91 men and 28 women; mean age 66 +/- 8 years; range 42-83 years) who underwent carotid endarterectomy for significant (>70%) carotid bifurcation stenosis were enrolled in this study.

A 53-year-old male patient with a large hydatid cyst of the left hemidiaphragm and smaller secondary cysts located in the left thoracic cavity and upper left abdominal quadrant presented with two progressively enlarging lipoma-like masses in the left hypochondrium and under the left scapulae respectively. Total excision of all the cysts was performed through a bilateral subcostal incision, with the left hemidiaphragm near totally excised and replaced by a synthetic bilayer mesh.

Background: The aim of this study was to compare ischemic preconditioning with the intermittent vascular occlusion technique in liver resections performed under inflow and outflow occlusion.

Methods: Fifty-four patients with resectable liver tumors assigned were randomly to undergo surgery with either ischemic preconditioning (IP group, n = 27) or with intermittent vascular occlusion (IVO group, n = 27). Both groups were compared regarding surgical parameters, aspartate transaminase levels, and apoptosis.
