Aims: Aortic wall stiffening in ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (aTAA) is common. However, the spatial and temporal relationships between stiffness, aortic size, and growth in aTAA remain unclear.

Methods And Results: In this single-centre retrospective study, we utilized vascular deformation mapping to extract multi-directional aortic motion, aortic distensibility, and aortic growth in a multi-planar fashion from multi-phasic ECG-gated computed tomography angiograms.

Objectives: Endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) for large infrarenal abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) has been associated with worse outcomes compared to EVAR for smaller AAAs. Whether these findings apply to complex AAAs (cAAA) remains uncertain.

Methods: We identified all intact complex EVAR (cEVAR) from 2012-2024 in the Vascular Quality Initiative.

Background: Previous studies have strongly suggested that stent-graft deployment and acute arch angulation increase aortic stiffness, the impact of surgical interposition grafting remains unclear. We investigated the impact of open surgery on aortic stiffness and compared this with stent-graft induced aortic stiffening, utilising an ex vivo model.

Methods: Porcine thoracic aortas were connected to a mock circulatory loop.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to investigate pre-surgical growth of the aortic arch using vascular deformation mapping (VDM) and how the proximal arch diameter correlates with involvement of a primary ascending aortic aneurysm.
  • The research included 123 patients who had multiple pre-operative CT scans and found that VDM indicated higher growth rates in patients with dilated arches, yet standard diameter measurements often failed to identify significant growth in non-dilated arches.
  • The findings suggest that VDM provides a more accurate assessment of arch involvement than just measuring diameter, which could enhance individualized surgical approaches for patients with ascending thoracic aortic aneurysms.
