Background: Transanal drainage tube (TDT) is used to prevent anastomotic leakage after surgery for rectal cancer. However, it remains unclear whether intraoperative TDT placement is also useful in preventing anastomotic leakage after ileal pouch-anal or ileal pouch-anal canal anastomosis (IPAA) in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC). This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of intraoperative TDT placement in preventing anastomotic leakage after IPAA in patients with UC.

Article Synopsis
  • Two main types of 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) treatments for ulcerative colitis are mesalazine and sulfasalazine, which are effective but can cause intolerance in some patients.
  • Symptoms of 5-ASA intolerance include increased diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pain, which can lead to worse health outcomes if patients stop the medication.
  • Clinicians may need to switch 5-ASA preparations for intolerant patients, and while there's no definitive diagnostic method for intolerance, a specific test can assist in diagnosis.

Article Synopsis
  • * In a study, researchers found that genes activated by type I interferon (T1IFN) are more active in ILC2s during colitis induced by DSS, and this signaling leads to lower production of certain cytokines.
  • * Blocking T1IFN signaling worsens colitis symptoms in mice, indicating that T1IFN plays a protective role in ILC2s during inflammation, with a link to a protein called amphiregulin (AREG), which may help mitigate colitis when supplemented.

Background: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an effective treatment for early-stage hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Although RFA is a relatively safe technique compared with surgery, several complications have been reported to be following/accompanying this treatment. Delayed diaphragmatic hernia caused by RFA is rare; however, the best surgical approach for its treatment is uncertain.
