Background: New treatment strategies for early rheumatoid arthritis are evolving rapidly. We aimed to compare addition of conventional disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (sulfasalazine and hydroxychloroquine) with addition of a tumour necrosis factor antagonist (infliximab) to methotrexate in patients with early rheumatoid arthritis.

Methods: We undertook a randomised trial in 15 rheumatology units in Sweden.

Objective: To study the clinical and biochemical effects of a low starting dose for gold therapy in rheumatoid arthritis patients with a contact allergy to gold.

Methods: Serum cytokines were assayed before and 24 h after the first injection of gold sodium thiomalate (GSTM).

Methods: The EULAR (European League against Rheumatism) criteria for individual response and a recently proposed remission criterion, DAS < 1.6, were applied to 90 patients with RA after treatment for 2 yr with disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (DMARDs) and/or corticosteroids.
