Enabling usable science takes a community: Using our roles as funders to catalyze change.

Calls to support co-designed and usable science to inform management of natural resources are growing. Making the shift will require diverse collaborations between those who hold, share, and use knowledge.

Hepatocellular Carcinoma.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a primary liver malignancy commonly encountered in the setting of chronic liver disease and cirrhosis. Survival in HCC is determined by the ABCs: (A) anatomic stage; (B) biologic grade; and (C) cirrhosis severity. Improvement of imaging techniques permits clinicians to accurately diagnose HCC without biopsy confirmation.

Analysis of macular carotenoids in the developing macaque retina: The timeline of macular pigment development.

In the mature retina, the components of the macular pigment, lutein (L), R,R-zeaxanthin (RRZ), R,S-zeaxanthin (RSZ, meso-zeaxanthin) are most concentrated in the central macula. L and RRZ are of dietary origin but RSZ is produced in situ from L. The relative proportions of L and Z isomers vary across the retina with eccentricity in the adult retina.

Mentored implementation to initiate a diabetes program in an underserved community: a pilot study.

Introduction: Community clinics often face pragmatic barriers, hindering program initiation and replication of controlled research trial results. Mentoring is a potential strategy to overcome these barriers. We piloted an in-person and telehealth mentoring strategy to implement the elehealth-supported, ntegrated Community Health Workers (CHWs), edication-access, group visit ducation (TIME) program in a community clinic.

Comparison of Antioxidant Properties of Dehydrolutein with Lutein and Zeaxanthin, and their Effects on Cultured Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells.

Dehydrolutein accumulates in substantial concentrations in the retina. The aim of this study was to compare antioxidant properties of dehydrolutein with other retinal carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, and their effects on ARPE-19 cells. The time-resolved detection of characteristic singlet oxygen phosphorescence was used to compare the singlet oxygen quenching rate constants of dehydrolutein, lutein, and zeaxanthin.
