Background: The incidence of silicosis has increased due to occupational silica exposure from artificial stone, with no treatments proven to halt or reverse the disease. Whole lung lavage (WLL) involves the instillation of fluid into the lungs to wash out silica particles and disease-causing inflammatory cells. This study aimed to determine the feasibility, safety, and possible benefit of WLL in patients with artificial stone silicosis.

Article Synopsis
  • Phenomenology highlights that individuals with schizophrenia experience a disrupted sense of time and self, leading to fragmented temporal experiences.
  • The study involved 41 patients with schizophrenia and 43 neurotypical participants, who were tasked with responding to visual targets following an initial warning signal and varying waiting periods.
  • Findings showed that while neurotypicals improved response times with longer waiting periods, this benefit diminished for patients, suggesting that their impaired temporal processing is linked to their disordered sense of self.

Timing and motor function share neural circuits and dynamics, which underpin their close and synergistic relationship. For instance, the temporal predictability of a sensory event optimizes motor responses to that event. Knowing when an event is likely to occur lowers response thresholds, leading to faster and more efficient motor behavior though in situations of response conflict can induce impulsive and inappropriate responding.

Introduction: Survival from refractory out of hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) without timely return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) utilising conventional advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) therapies is dismal. CHEER3 was a safety and feasibility study of pre-hospital deployed extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (ECPR) for refractory OHCA in metropolitan Australia.

Methods: This was a single jurisdiction, single-arm feasibility study.
