Palladium-catalyzed cross-couplings of aryl chlorides usually call for bulky, electron-rich ligands such as phosphines or heterocyclic carbenes. We have now found that similarly powerful cross-coupling catalysts are obtained by the reaction of palladium salts with alkynyllithium reagents. The species initially formed in this process was characterized as a dilithium tetraalkinyl palladate complex.

The 3d-metal catalyst Mn(CO) Br was found to efficiently promote ortho C-H allylations of arenecarboxylates in the presence of neocuproine as the ligand. Despite the simplicity of directing group and catalyst system, the selectivity goes well beyond the state-of-the-art in that mono-allylated products are obtained exclusively with high selectivities for the least hindered ortho-position. The directing group can optionally be removed by in situ decarboxylation, opening up a regioselective entry to allyl arenes.

Starting from commercially available DMSAuCl and diazonium salts, cationic [ ]Au complexes were synthesized in a selective, photosensitizer-free, photochemical reaction by irradiation with blue LED light. This new protocol represents the first easy synthesis of these types of pincer complexes in moderate to excellent yield starting from a readily available gold(I) precursor with nitrogen as the only by-product. Owing to the disadvantages of known protocols, especially the toxicity in the case of a transmetalation with mercury or the necessity for a mostly twofold excess of a gold precursor, this method offers an attractive alternative towards this kind of gold(III) complexes.

The process of patient care performed by an anaesthesiologist during high invasive surgery requires fundamental knowledge of the physiologic processes and a long standing experience in patient management to cope with the inter-individual variability of the patients. Biomedical engineering research improves the patient monitoring task by providing technical devices to measure a large number of a patient's vital parameters. These measurements improve the safety of the patient during the surgical procedure, because pathological states can be recognised earlier, but may also lead to an increased cognitive load of the physician.

A patient with right upper quadrant pain showed normal tracer extraction and a prolonged hepatocellular phase during biliary imaging, findings that are most consistent with complete common duct obstruction. He had no other evidence of biliary tract obstruction and was diagnosed subsequently as having viral hepatitis. Hepatitis must be considered when biliary imaging suggests complete common bile duct obstruction.
