Perioperative and ICU Healthcare Analytics within a Veterans Integrated System Network: a Qualitative Gap Analysis.

Health care facilities are implementing analytics platforms as a way to document quality of care. However, few gap analyses exist on platforms specifically designed for patients treated in the Operating Room, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and Intensive Care Unit (ICU). As part of a quality improvement effort, we undertook a gap analysis of an existing analytics platform within the Veterans Healthcare Administration.

Fracture of fusion mass after hardware removal in patients with high sagittal imbalance.

Object: As spinal fusions become more common and more complex, so do the sequelae of these procedures, some of which remain poorly understood. The authors report on a series of patients who underwent removal of hardware after CT-proven solid fusion, confirmed by intraoperative findings. These patients later developed a spontaneous fracture of the fusion mass that was not associated with trauma.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumors of the chest wall.

Primitive neuroectodermal tumor (PNET) is a rare, highly malignant small-cell neoplasm that most often arises from the chest wall or paravertebral region. A patient is described from whom resection, intensive chemotherapy, and bone marrow transplant were unsuccessful. Eleven patients were treated between 1975 and 1985; there was only one long-term survivor (48 months) despite intensive multidisciplinary treatment.
