MRI analysis of in vivo meniscal and tibiofemoral kinematics in ACL-deficient and normal knees.

The objectives of this study were to analyze simultaneously meniscal and tibiofemoral kinematics in healthy volunteers and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)-deficient patients under axial load-bearing conditions using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Ten healthy volunteers and eight ACL-deficient patients were examined with a high-field, closed MRI system. For each group, both knees were imaged at full extension and partial flexion ( approximately 45 degrees ) with a 125N compressive load applied to the foot.

Magnetic resonance imaging of in vivo kinematics after total knee arthroplasty.

Purpose: To improve the quality of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) on knees after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) by minimizing image artifacts caused by metallic implants, and to establish a method determining in vivo kinematics of TKA knees using MRI.

Materials And Methods: Two knee implants made of cobalt-chrome and oxidized zirconium were tested with different pulse sequences and imaging parameters. Then, in vivo kinematic MRI was performed on five well-functioning TKAs under simulated weight-bearing conditions.

Th1/Th2 cytokine profiles in saliva of HIV-positive smokers with oropharyngeal candidiasis.

Oropharyngeal candidiasis (OPC) is a common opportunistic infection among HIV-positive individuals and often correlates with a CD4 cell number < 200 cells/microl. This study further examined the association of smoking and OPC in HIV-positive persons. A strong association between smoking and OPC was seen in HIV-positive individuals with > or =200 CD4 cells/microl.

Seroepidemiology of low and high oncogenic risk types of human papillomavirus in a predominantly male cohort of STD clinic patients.

Human papillomaviruses (HPV) infecting the genital tract are associated with warts and anogenital malignancies. Although HPV is a highly prevalent sexually transmitted disease (STD), the majority of research has focused on female cohorts due to gender specific sequelae. Our objective was to measure the epidemiological features and seroprevalences of HPV-6/11 and 16 in a predominantly male group of STD clinic patients.

Atovaquone suspension for treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia in HIV-infected patients.

Objective: To describe clinical experience with atovaquone suspension for the treatment of Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP) in HIV-infected patients.

Design: A retrospective chart review.

Methods: The medical records of 54 HIV-infected patients with PCP treated with atovaquone were examined.
