This work explores the complex hydrodynamics in magnetophoretic microfluidic processes, focusing on the interplay of forces and particle concentrations. The study employs a combined simulation and experimental approach to investigate the impact of magnetophoresis on magneto-responsive nanoparticles (MNPs) and their environment, including non-magneto-responsive nanoparticles (non-MNPs) in a microfluidic system. Our findings reveal that the motion of MNPs induces a hydrodynamic convective motion of non-MNPs, significantly affecting the separation efficiency and purity of the particles.

Importance: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is a leading cause of acute respiratory tract infections among adults and is estimated to cause approximately 159 000 hospitalizations among adults aged 65 years and older in the US each year. Estimates of hospitalization among adults with outpatient medically attended RSV (MA-RSV) infections are required to design interventional studies that aim to prevent hospitalization.

Objective: To assess absolute risk of 28-day, all-cause hospitalization following outpatient MA-RSV infections in adults.

We develop a computational method for modeling electrostatic interactions of arbitrarily shaped, polarizable objects on colloidal length scales, including colloids/nanoparticles, polymers, and surfactants, dispersed in explicit ion electrolytes and nonionic solvents. Our method computes the nonuniform polarization charge distribution induced in a colloidal particle by both externally applied electric fields and local electric fields arising from other charged objects in the dispersion. This leads to expressions for electrostatic energies, forces, and torques that enable efficient molecular dynamics and Brownian dynamics simulations of colloidal dispersions in electrolytes, which can be harnessed to accurately predict structural and transport properties.

Cranial nerve injury after orotracheal intubation is a rare complication, which has varied etiology. We present a case of combined unilateral hypoglossal and lingual nerve palsy after orotracheal intubation. The current literature was reviewed for the diagnostic, treatment, follow-up, and preventive measures of this complication.

Unlabelled: Debridement is an important component of wound management and can improve outcomes for patients. Debridement needs to be done by an appropriately trained health professional, but the scope of practice, credentials, training, competencies, and regulatory requirements regarding wound debridement can differ. Best Practice Recommendations were created to positively influence patient safety related to all methods of debridement, across the continuum of care, and to be implemented widely by nurses at all professional levels in Canada.
