Hepatitis E virus (HEV), shared by humans, domestic animals, and wildlife, is an emerging global public health threat. Because wild boars are a major reservoir of HEV, the new zoonotic interfaces resulting from wild boar population increase and synurbization significantly contribute to increasing the risk of zoonotic transmission of HEV. This study characterizes HEV strains of synurbic wild boars and assesses their relationship with sympatric human and domestic swine HEV strains.

One of the principal consequences of climate warming on hibernating mammals could be the loss of optimal conditions for hibernation. Although hibernating mammals, like bats, may be particularly vulnerable to climate warming due to a potential reduction of energy saving during the hibernation, there is a lack of knowledge regarding how they will be affected and how they will respond to this impact. Bats are important natural reservoir hosts of a diverse range of viruses that can be transmitted to humans and have been suggested to play an important role in the Zika virus (ZIKV) transmission cycle. However, the exact role of these animals as reservoirs for flaviviruses is still controversial.
