Control of magnetization and electric polarization is attractive in relation to tailoring materials for data storage and devices such as sensors or antennae. In magnetoelectric materials, these degrees of freedom are closely coupled, allowing polarization to be controlled by a magnetic field, and magnetization by an electric field, but the magnitude of the effect remains a challenge in the case of single-phase magnetoelectrics for applications. We demonstrate that the magnetoelectric properties of the mixed-anisotropy antiferromagnet LiNiFePO are profoundly affected by partial substitution of Ni ions with Fe on the transition metal site.

Non-stoichiometric 214-nickelates with Ruddlesden-Popper (RP) type frameworks emerged as potential candidates for mixed electronic/ionic conductors in the intermediate temperature range. In this work we investigated structural aspects of the oxygen ion mobility diffusion mechanisms in non-stoichiometric NdNiO nickelates by X-ray (laboratory and synchrotron) as well by neutron diffraction. Temperature dependent synchrotron powder diffraction revealed a phase diagram of unprecedented complexity, involving a series of highly organized, 3D modulated phases related to oxygen ordering below 800 K.

Protonated crystals of glycine silver nitrate (C4H10Ag2N4O10) undergo a displacive kind of structural phase transition to a ferroelectric phase at 218 K. Glycine silver nitrate (GSN) is a light-sensitive crystal. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction investigations are difficult to perform on these crystals due to the problem of crystal deterioration on prolonged exposure to X-rays.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the single-crystal La(2)CoO(4.14) using synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction across a temperature range of 10 to 470 K, identifying unique structural features.
  • It reports the discovery of a new intermediate phase called High Temperature Less Orthorhombic (HTLO) that occurs between the Low Temperature Orthorhombic (LTO) and High Temperature Tetragonal (HTT) phases, observed for the first time between 413-433 K.
  • The transition from LTO to HTLO involves a change in modulation characteristics and leads to a significant dynamic disorder of CoO(6) octahedra in the HTT phase, analyzed using
