Performance data were collected on the Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test (K-BIT) from a total of 196 individuals from six diverse populations. College students did best, followed closely by closed head-injured adults and their controls; the order of performance then was learning-disabled children, psychiatric patients, and finally, neurosurgical patients in the acute stages of recovery.

C57BL/6J mice were studied for self-administration of ethanol (EtOH) during a signal period that preceded delivery of an environmental stressor (noise) in the home cage. Animals were given 5 weeks of conditioning in which a 5-min period of 75-dB pulsed noise (SIGNAL) preceded a 20-min period of more intense, 90-dB pulsed noise (NOISE) five times daily. EtOH (10% w/v) was then provided in a choice procedure, and drink tube contacts were monitored by computer.

These include: eunuchism of testosterone's target tissues, contrasting with clinically normal testes; normal embryonic male differentiation; low serum testosterone concentrations; moderately decreased or normal LH serum concentrations which are coincident with low testosterone levels therefore reflecting at least relative LH insufficiency; normal FSH levels; normal LHRH response; variable clomifen response; poor spermatogenesis improved by HCG and/or testosterone, and in some cases by HMG; atrophic leydig cells. Although in very rare instances it may include anosmia, the fertile eunuch syndrome should be clearly distinguished from complete FSH and LH deficiency with or without anosmia.

The mechanism which is responsible for this activity and for it's competition with 5 alpha reduction includes hypothalamo-pituitary receptors, genetic induction of sexual differentiation, binding proteins, and sulfo and glyco-conjugation. Aromatization is determinant before, during, and after ovulation, as well as in developing pregnancy.
