Sewer and stormwater pipe leakage can lead to the degradation of urban groundwater quality. This groundwater may be subsequently used for public water supply and so the resulting water treatment and public health consequences can be serious. To understand the impact of sewer exfiltration on groundwater quality, suitable indicators need to be sampled and analysed for.

In the United Kingdom, this issue gained increased importance with the last year's low volumes of groundwater replenishment that resulted in increased water shortages all over the country. An urban water volume and quality model (UVQ) was applied to a suburb of Doncaster (United Kingdom) to assess the current water supply system and to compare it with new potential scenarios of water management.
