Nonmetallic inclusion (NMI) populations in superelastic (SE) Nitinol fine wires (<140 μm in diameter) were investigated by combining plasma focused ion beam (PFIB) serial sectioning with scanning electron microscopy (SEM). High purity (HP)—lower oxygen content and standard purity (SP)—higher oxygen content Nitinol wires were sectioned and imaged. The three-dimensional (3D) reconstructions provided more complete connectivity of NMIs and pores as well as information about the distribution of the features within the wire volume that is not possible with traditional two-dimensional (2D) imaging techniques.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFComparative performance and complementarity tests of four arthropod sampling methods (aerial netting, hand collection, pitfall traps, and sticky traps), used by forensic entomologists in death investigations, training workshops, and research trials, were conducted from simultaneously placed human and porcine subjects inside the Forensic Anthropology Center at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, TN. A secondary aim investigated the widely held claim that pig carcasses are reliable surrogates for human corpses. Over a 35-d period in summer 1989, >72,000 invertebrates from three subjects (one human, two pigs) were sampled of which 93% were members of the forensically important (FI) fauna.

The leptin receptor (OB-R/B219) is expressed in a variety of protein isoforms not only in the central nervous system, but also in reproductive, and hematopoietic tissues. We reported recently that the OB-R/B219 was associated with a variety of hematopoietic lineages as well as the small fraction of cells containing the long-term reconstituting hematopoietic stem cells.
