This publication represents a contribution for the experimental investigation of a suitable skin substitute for temporary covering of vast burns. The synthetic skin substitute SYSpur-derm is a bilaminar polyurethane foam substance. It was tested in the experimental animal pig on skin lesions after third-degree burn and necrectomy.

A total of 85 skin biopsies taken from 23 pigs with experimental 3rd-degree burns was tested concerning the efficiency of the synthetic skin substitutes SYSpur-derm (GDR) and Epigard (USA). Both the materials have an excellent wound-cleansing-effect, show good adhesion to the wound surface and have no toxic or antigenic effect.

This study contributes to the experimental investigation of thermic injuries and their metabolic sequels. A model for burns is created in rabbits and normal values determined. Preliminary results are reported for shifts of hemoglobin, hematocrit, and erythrocyte count, as well as for changes in levels of proteins, electrolytes, and blood sugar.
